Samuel A. Meier is associate professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Ohio State University. He is author of The Messenger in the Ancient Semitic World and Speaking of Speaking: Marking Direct Discourse in the Hebrew Bible.

Brilliant & Impressive

This is an extraordinary book in many ways, not the least of which is the clarity of thought and economy of language. Meier not only instructs but exhibits the very gift of 'seeing' he finds unique to the pre-exilic prophets of the Bible. By that I mean, he makes visible to the ordinary eye what is seen but not 'seen'. He points out typically overlooked 'trees' in the Old Testament, so that the 'forest' can be seen anew.
This is the opinion of a layman; one for whom the vastness of the Bible necessitates grappling with the big picture to the detriment of significant details. I suspect this book will have a similar impact with Bible scholars and theological "experts". Meier exhibits a refreshing enthusiasm and boldness in piecing together a coherent framework that serves to untangle mystery. He obviously has some Sherlock Holmes in him.
I am greatly looking forward to seeing whose feathers are soonest ruffled by this work. I find no hint of an agenda in its writing and no forced conclusions which tips the hand of theological "ax-grinders". I will be very surprised, and frankly disappointed, if significant articles or interviews with Meier don't follow, from the 'elders' of the biblical/theological world.
Not that this necessarily reads as a theological work. I can well imagine this being greatly enjoyed by those wo take a more literary (read 'secular') approach to the Bible than I do. Meier makes significant use of an impressive array of serious biblical commentary throughout; thankfully footnoted to preserve its great readability. He not only has all the tools to do this job, but he appreciates on whose shoulders he stands.
I hope this book marks the beginning of a prolific writing career.

Thought provoking, little application

In "Themes and Transformations in Old Testament Prophecy," Samuel Meier describes several themes of prophets in the Old Testament. He identifies prophecy's progressive changes over time, with many characteristics changing during the time of the exile.
Samuel Meier does an excellent job of drawing together the characteristics of individual prophecies and linking them to identify themes in prophecy. His careful observation of the text and his willingness to include the Deuteronomic prophets give weight to his arguments. He quotes multiple Biblical examples to show his support, and uses examples from all of the OT prophets - male and female, named and anonymous, major and minor, literary and Deuteronomic.
Further, Meier does a wonderful job of building his argument chapter by chapter. Stylistically, Meier provides excellent summaries or reviews at the beginning of each chapter to build his overarching argument. While the conclusion of each chapter leaves the reader wondering what the point is, Meier usually clarifies how this builds into his broader thesis at the start of the following chapter. He limits the scope of the chapter to its subject and the supporting evidence, publisher's 20-page chapter quotas notwithstanding. In his introduction, his thesis was so general that it is a bit unclear that it is his thesis, so he can improve his clarity by articulating that his purpose is merely to point out that there are significant changes in prophecy that revolve around the exile.
Many of his arguments are built on implied themes that are not explicit in the Biblical text. There are no verses that specifically eliminate the possibility of post-exilic prophets standing in the council of God, nor are there concrete references to a loss of musical or poetic style after the exile. Some of Meier's arguments are built on silence or the absence of references, such as the lack of references to "writing" in the pre-exilic prophets or the means of their revelation with God. However, the consistency of these absences gives weight to his arguments, that these coincidences may indicate a broader trend. Further, when they are stacked on top of the other trends he identifies in this book, they make logical sense. If, indeed, the post-exilic prophets were not in the council of God, it would make sense that they would be less understanding of God's revelation. Overall, Meier's cautious yet insightful identification of possible themes is well-structured.
A significant weakness of the book as a whole is its relevance to Biblical interpretation. While the themes are interesting and the concept of a transformative period is thought provoking, it has little effect on the meaning of the texts. At the conclusion of the book, Meier has nothing to add for personal application, for hermeneutics, or for New Testament scholarship. What is one to do with this book? If one accepts his conclusions about the themes of prophecy, it is unclear how this relates to prophecy in the New Testament or prophecy today. It is not at all clear how these differences and similarities might affect one's understanding of Scripture. It would have been more useful for Meier to write several chapters explaining how one might use his themes. He might posit how it might affect the interpretation of apocalyptic literature, which is portrayed in confident terms but is, in reality, far from the immediate revelation of the divine council. Meier might explain how a God who interacts with temporally-bound creatures determines life today or responds to our prayers. He might have explained how worship today can explore the artful and poetic insight of prophecy and art's connection to spiritual insight. As it is, this book leaves much of its own insight squarely in the realm of academia.
Overall, "Themes and Transformations in Old Testament Prophecy" is a book worth reading by pastors, seminarians, and those interested in the Old Testament. It brings fresh new perspectives, provokes thoughtful questions, and is not hesitant to challenge preconceived notions with Biblical evidence to the contrary. Meier's book is creative, insightful, researched, and well-documented. It balanced readability with scholarship and style with substance. Its only major flaw is the lack of application to Biblical interpretation. Perhaps a subsequent version or a complimentary volume will explore its meaning for the church today.

Great book! Very thorough investigation into the old testament prophets. Not specifically about the themes as much as an investigation into the way that thematic elements recur and change over the years and through the various prophets. Very interesting read.
