ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dean Christopher has had overlapping careers in journalism, advertising and playing piano into the wee hours for jazz aficionados with nowhere to go in the morning. His writing has appeared in many magazines, including National Lampoon, OMNI, SPIN (Contributing Editor for 8 years) and Discover, for whom he wrote articles and the popular book, Twenty Things You Didn’t Know About Everything (HarperCollins, 2008). His savage spoof of the self-help industry, The Loser’s Guide To Personal Failure, appeared in 2009, then unaccountably disappeared. Educated at Georgetown University, the University of Madrid and the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Dean speaks a number of identifiable languages. What can we say? He likes to talk. During his years in Army Intelligence, Dean helped humiliate the International Communist Conspiracy, which has never recovered its self-esteem. He politely refuses to take sole credit for this. Mr. Christopher does not wear a beard; is clean in thought and deed; and claims to be 31 years old, but we think he may be lying about this.

This book has no beginning. Nor does it have an ending. Just lots and lots of fun stuff in the middle. Whimsical and witty and unpredictable. And absurd...like Nuggets of Quicksilver.
I keep mine in the bathroom. The Book, that is.

ORIGINAL AND VERY FUNNY

Like all great works of humour, this does not require the reader to be on the "same page" with the humorist. Great wit is universal and the laughs in this one start on page one. I love originality in humour and Mr Dean Christopher has a particularly different and wonderfully warped take on the world. I'd call it an American Monty Python; intelligently silly.

After being impressed by the 70-461 book and passing the exam with flying colours, I thought I would give this one a shot. Boy was I wrong. This book is beyond bad and you will need to allocate a few hours per chapter just to get through some of the mistakes in it:

- First of all, even if you follow the instructions in the exercises from chapter 3 and onwards step by step, the SSIS packages won't run. At first you may think you've made a mistake somewhere but even the solutions in the Solutions folder don't run because they are full of design flaws.
- The language used is extremely ambigious and can be interpreted in different ways. It's easy to get confused even if you have considerable experience with DWs and SSIS.
- Some of the instructions are simply wrong and the prerequisites are not stated. For example, the instructions on installing MDS in chapter 15 are missing several key points.

I could go on but it suffices to say that I am extremely disappointed in Microsoft's using this book as the official preparation for the 70-463 exam. It's a very sloppy job and if you have an alternative, please use another book.

Don't depend on the Exercises to be accurate

After spending an hour trying to debug why I was unable to get through a particular exercise in the book, I figured out that there were quite a few issues with the way Tables were built as per the book, and there were missing steps that I needed to guess at to get to work.

The information may be reasonably accurate, but it gets very frustrating trying to troubleshoot an issue only to realize you did everything as specified, but the steps were wrong.

Great DW Reference Book -- Poor Training Kit

The book is well organized and covers the huge topic of Data Warehousing in great detail. If you need a reference with hands-on examples of how to get things done--this book will get you up-to-speed and on track in no time. The practice exercises are well thought-out and provide invaluable guidance towards learning a broad and difficult subject. The nearly 800 pages are organized into 20 Chapters that cover each topic in detail. Each topic has 1 - 3 Lessons with an estimated completion time. I counted 56 Lessons with an estimated time of 45 hours. Add sample questions for each lesson and Case Studies for each Chapter and I suggest you plan on at least 60 hours to cover the book. The book covers SSIS in great detail including the new Deployment model which is essential. It offers only an introduction to Data Quality Services and Master Data Services but together with the exercises, that's enough to get through installation and a few examples. The book finishes with an intro to Data Mining and some nice examples of Advanced Data Quality with DQS Cleansing and Fuzzy Transforms. Get this book if you want/need to implement a Data Warehouse.

Now having said that, you will need to factor in the horrible state of the practice content. About 1/2 of the practice exercises don't work as presented. I have a good bit of experience in this field and managed to get through almost every exercise. But it was a struggle. I'd estimate that I spent at least 10 additional hours troubleshooting and cleaning up code. Much of the code is SSIS and quite a few packages (including the "Solution" packages)are blank! Some packages build on others as you progress through the lessons, so you might try jumping ahead to find some working code.

Now let's discuss the sample questions and included practice tests. I made sure that I understood every Chapter Lesson Question and all 186 Practice Test Questions thoroughly. Took the test and scored 628. Bummer. The Cert Exam is nothing like the practice material provided in the book. I went through the entire book a second time and purchased another practice exam (Thanks MS for the 2nd Shot) and passed ok.

If you are comfortable with this topic, can troubleshoot/debug code and/or want a great reference book--This does the job. I keep the pdf version handy for on-the-job reference. If you are new to this topic and/or looking to get your MCSA (this was the final exam for me) you might want to look elsewhere. I struggled with a rating. Clearly the authors put a lot into this book, but it was a disastrous training kit. Good Luck.

In the Key of Perfect

Surely there are hundreds of Christmas carol books. I've encountered perhaps 70 to 100 of 'em. A few, such as the carols in the legendary "Fireside Folk Song Book" are splendid: easy to play yet with musically attractive arrangements, printed so the pianist isn't squinting, and in a singable key. I was looking for a gift for a beginner, though. and, through luck and the helpfulness of Amazon custom-reviews, I found it!

The "Ultimate Christmas: 100 Easy Seasonal Favorites" is an all-time best, in my experience.

Among its virtues: large print and excellent contrast for visibility, arrangements simple enough for the first year pianist yet easy to augment for the more experienced, choice of key signatures where many voices sound good, neither too high nor too low, and, mirable dictu---easy guitar chords.

Further, only two keys are used throughout so the book is gloriously free of the bane of enthusiastic but not highly skilled friends-and-family singing: a different key signature for just about every song. Piano, guitar, and voices sound wonderful in these arrangements without rehearsals, first time around.

True, highly skilled, professional musicians may wish for more complex, elaborated arrangements with more harmony indicated for the voices.

If, however, you are looking for a family-friendly book of carols for piano, guitar, voices----this may be it!

Now let me praise the selection: almost all the traditional songs are here, as well as the newer classics from movies and popular music. The price is excellent for the completeness, the musicial choices, and the quality of paper and binding. I'll go to this title again (and probably again) as gifts for first-second year pianists and guitar players, and I'll get another copy too, for myself, arranged in the key of perfect.

Good Enough for Me

I'm an older player/learner who practices in spurts around many activities. I wanted something that would not get me too frustrated, but would also allow me to have some sense of accomplishment. I'm not a good pianist, play for myself and not others, and cannot be a good judge of the musical accuracy or sophistication of this music. I've read that this editor in other easy piano books makes mistakes with notation. Better musicians have complained that the editor sometimes makes original tunes seem unrecognizable. To my weak ears, this collection and its arrangements are just about right. I'm also very pleased with the traditional selections--and the price was right.

On the cover of Phenomenology of the Visual Arts - James Elkins says something about this being the most systematic phenomenology of the visual arts. Rest assured it's more than that - it's the most comprehensive philosophy of the visual arts ever written by anyone. Everything from drawing to digital is in there, and what's more is that Crowther concentrates on whats embodied in the visual work itself - instead of the usual emphasis on 'theory' that remains stuck on reception.
