About the Author
Born to an American father and French mother, David has been confused about where he belongs since day one. After graduating from college, he decided to go abroad for a 'short while' to figure things out. He worked as a cycling tour guide in Europe for two years and later accepted a position as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, where he lived and worked in a Malinke village. Unwilling to return to the US prematurely, David took another couple years to earn a Masters degree in New Zealand on a grant from the Rotary Foundation. His thesis research on renewable energy production brought him back to Senegal on a Fulbright Fellowship, and later led to work on New Zealand's future energy strategy. This all took a bit longer than he'd originally anticipated—just a touch over 7 years—and he's now desperately figuring out how to reintegrate into normal society.

Holy cow. What an inspiring read! I don't often read travel books, as they never seem to grasp my full attention, but this one was tops. It is captivating, enthralling, and a perfect balance of light-hearted and metaphysical. I tore through it in days. The intimate details of Mr. Campbell's adventures will leave you simultaneously longing for less responsibility and more adventure, yet grateful for where you are at.
This should prove to be a great read for seasoned travelers and novices alike. With non-stop action and hilarious misfortunes, it does not disappoint. It was certainly fun getting lost in someone else's adventures!

A must read for all adventure lovers young or old. Most compelling for me was the author's ability to combine adventure with the deep appreciation of other people and cultures. Seeing the world is exciting,but what one remembers longest are those human encounters which make us who we are. This book celebrates those encounters.
