Engaging and informative story of the ecosystem science

This book was used as the primary text in a graduate Ecosystems course I took. It is clearly written so that I - without ever taking an introductory biology course and having primarily a mathematical background - had no problem understanding the main ideas. What I found even more appealing is that Hagen places the development of these ideas in their historic context and skilfully links them to the authors and their characters. This has been invaluable to me for understanding how research is done in biology, where no consensus on a basic conceptual definition (what is an ecosystem?) can linger for decades. (This is very different from mathematics, which enjoys a luxury of not concerning itself with the messiness of the real world, and can afford to build theories based on absolutely clear and unambiguous definitions).
Reading this book, along with in-class dissection and discussions of classical papers that Hagen covers, resulted in very interesting, informative and enriching experience.

Great book

I was assigned this book as reading for my qualifying exams. As a graduate student in ecology I found this book to give a very interesting view of the historical perspective of ecosystem ecology. It was easy to read and I very much enjoyed it despite the fact that I was forced to read it. Plus it helped me get a few questions right during my exams. I definately reccomend to anyone interested in ecology.
