Embodying Culture: Pregnancy in Japan and Israel (Studies in Medical Anthropology), by Tsipy Ivry

Embodying Culture is an ethnographically grounded exploration of pregnancy in two different cultures—Japan and Israel—both of which medicalize pregnancy. Tsipy Ivry focuses on "low-risk" or "normal" pregnancies, using cultural comparison to explore the complex relations among ethnic ideas about procreation, local reproductive politics, medical models of pregnancy care, and local modes of maternal agency.

The ethnography pieces together the voices of pregnant Japanese and Israeli women, their doctors, their partners, the literature they read, and depicts various clinical encounters such as ultrasound scans, explanatory classes for amniocentesis, birthing classes, and special pregnancy events.

The emergent pictures suggest that athough experiences of pregnancy in Japan and Israel differ, pregnancy in both cultures is an energy-consuming project of meaning-making— suggesting that the sense of biomedical technologies are not only in the technologies themselves but are assigned by those who practice and experience them.

Review
"A fascinating double-ethnography of pregnancy in two cultures. This outstanding book reveals stunning cultural differences in the interpretation of the embodied experience of pregnancy. In spite of their mutual technological sophistication, Japanese and Israeli views on pregnancy could hardly be more different, nor could the biomedical advice that women in each culture receive. Ivry's work takes Brigitte Jordan's analysis of birth in four cultures to a new level, focusing specifically on the cultural influences that profoundly affect both women's and obstetricians' perceptions and management of pregnancy, and deeply demonstrating the influence of culture on biomedical 'science.'"

(Robbie Davis-Floyd author of Birth as an American Rite of Passage 2009-01-27)

"Ivry's extremely rich ethnography succeeds in defamiliarizing assumptions about pregnancy and gestation in both Israel and Japan. Recommended." (Choice 2010-09-01)

"Ivry's timely book adds ethnographic description and analysis to public discussions about exactly what pregnancy means. This book reminds us why pregnancy--not just the newest technological methods--is a fascinating window into culture, and the themes it considers will be of interest to teachers and students in anthropology, gender studies, medical anthropology, epidemiology, and area studies." (Ethos 2010-01-01)

"With finely crafted ethnography, Tsipy Ivry engages her readers in the most intimate of experiences--pregnancy. Research in Japan and Israel reveals how medical knowledge and technologies are made use of differentially in these two locations by both physicians and women to accomplish a remarkably dissimilar embodiment of future motherhood. Ivry's position is that concern about the ramifications of technologically assisted reproduction should not usurp representations of the cultures of pregnancy." (Margaret Lock author of Twice Dead: Organ Transplants and the Reinvention of Death 2009-01-07)

Welcome to Tsipy Ivry's world
By Judy Slome Cohain
The book is deeply influenced by the author's biases. She has unforgivably left out Israeli midwifery, all Israeli religious and ultra religious women who make up 45% of the pregnancies in Israel, Russian and Ethiopian immigrants who make up 10% of the birthing population, and most Arabs who make up 20%. Her conclusions are based on women like her and a total of 100 interviews.

She only makes one reference to midwives when midwives deliver 75% of births in Israel: "Anthropologists also account for more organized and explicit forms of resistance, such as those of midwives in the home-birth movement"

As far as articulating clear ideas this is a typical sentence:
"In environmentalism I attempt to capture the huge range of somatic and emotional responsibilities that the Japanese regime of truth allocates to the pregnant mother while emphasing that primary responsibility for fetal health lies in the bodies of pregnant mothers and that their management of their bodies- which serve as the environment of the fetus- is crucial for the creation of a healthy fetus"

I prefer Barbara Katz Rothman, who is more accurate and more articulate.

Amazing and wonderful!

This book compares the ordinary, medicalized course of pregnancy in Israel and Japan. It is really wondrous to see such fascinating accounts of what two cultures make of pregnancy, ultrasound, amniocentesis, birth and how VERY differently people typically think in each country. She talks of the viewpoints of both ob/gyns and pregnant women and how they tie together.

In Israel, there is a preoccupation with genetic defects and a conception of pregnancy as a big gamble, pressure to have as much pre-natal testing as possible and to abort if abnormalities are found, a lot of emphasis on genetics and little emphasis on environmental conditions in pregnancy. In Japan, there is emphasis on both physical and mental environment for the developing fetus so that obstetricians are very strict about weight gain and nutrition and also give a lot of advice like have a serene life and do not fight with a spouse etc for the good of the child (putting a lot of pressure on the woman for the outcome of the pregnancy). As well, in Japan vaginal exams are regular and frequent and in Israel they are much rarer. In both cases, Ivry is aware of how medicine is something of an instrument of state intrusion into private lives and of social cohesion and coercion. One "modern medicine," but such different ways to integrate it into life.

This is an amazing book and I can't recommend it too highly!
