About the Author
Henry Watson Fowler (10 March 1858 - 26 December 1933) was an English schoolmaster, lexicographer and commentator on the usage of the English language. He is notable for both A Dictionary of Modern English Usage and his work on the Concise Oxford Dictionary, and was described by The Times as "a lexicographical genius".

The Sovereign's English from A to Zed

These are my first impressions, as the dictionary arrived in today's mail. The book itself is printed on heavy paper which I didn't think publishers used any more. The guide words are in boldface capitals, and the 38,000 headwords (no, I have not counted them) are in boldface lower case, obviously with proper nouns capitalized. Because this is a reprint of a book first published 101 years ago, the text seems to be squeezed together on the pages. The print is large enough, though, for me to read it without the aid of a magnifying glass.
Why buy a hundred-year-old dictionary? One, it was edited by the famous Fowler brothers. Henry Fowler compiled "Modern English Usage," which has been edited three times since his death because of the cachet his name still enjoys among purists of English style. Two, it gives a linguistic snapshot of the English language just before the upheavals of the 20th century radically changed the language and the people who spoke it. Three, you will have a better way to understand classic English literature. I sometimes think that modern misinterpretations of Regency and Victorian literature owe as much to the changes in language as to the ideologies espoused by critics and English professors.
The brief answer to the question is that you will love this book if you love English language and literature.

Handsome Reprint of a Dictionary Classic

Early editions of the Concise Oxford are hard to find and expensive when offered in good condition. This reprint of the first edition, originally published in 1911, will be appreciated by dictionary collectors, word mavens (a phrase not in the first edition) and students of early 20th century English literature. Physically, this is an attractive looking volume. However, the thick paper pages in the reprint makes the dictionary somewhat difficult to use: you need both hand to keep the dictionary open. I have copies of the original first and second editions the latter published in 1929. Both have somewhat smaller dimension and both are printed on thin paper. When opened the dictionaries lie flat, a great convenience Nevertheless, this is a worthy reprint. Buy a copy before it goes out of print.

Classic first edition

The item itself would benefit enormously if it were printed on better quality paper. Other than that quibble the book is up to the required standard of today's publications.
