About the Author
Jeff Holt is a Licensed Professional Counselor who lives in Plano, Texas with his wife, Sarena, their two daughters, Allison and Julia, as well as their three cats, Sadie, Spooky, and Maizie. Jeff graduated from the University of North Texas with a Master of Arts Degree and taught English Composition for three semesters. Following this, he decided on a career change and returned to UNT to obtain a second Masters in Counselor Education. For many years Jeff worked with both severely mentally ill adults and severely disturbed children. Currently, Jeff works as a Mental Health Case Manager. Jeff’s poetry has been published in numerous print and online journals, as well as in online anthologies and three print anthologies: Able Muse Anthology, ed. Alexander Pepple, Able Muse Press, 2010; A Mind Apart: Melancholy, Madness and Addiction, ed. Mark Bauer, Oxford UP, 2008; and Sonnets: 150 Sonnets, ed. William Baer, Evansville UP, 2005. Most recently, his poem “The Stalker’s Villanelle” was reprinted in the textbook CAPE Literatures in English Poetry Module, 2012, as part of a larger literary curriculum for secondary students in the West Caribbean.

A coworker and friend

I am proud to say, I once had an office next to Jeff's. He kept me entertained and enlightened with his humor, his clinical expertise, and his love of prog music. And yes, at times he let me read some of his poetry. This complilation of his writings brings together the themes, perceptions, and startling-deep emotions of this most interesting person. No more excerpts or short versions; we finally have a symphony.

For a new poet to be endorsed by Richard Wilbur, who at 91 might easily be considered the greatest living American poet, is a most remarkable event.
But the work of Jeff Holt, already found in several literary anthologies and a multitude of journals both print and online, clearly merits that endorsement.
Holt's versatility and technical skill in the difficult villanelle, sonnet, and sestina forms are evident throughout the collection, but the extremity of the situations portrayed in these polished poems exerts a pressure from within that shocks the reader into new awareness of how desperate the human enterprise can become. One remembers the title of Harlan Ellison's great science fiction story, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream." The villains and the victims in these poems would never speak these words aloud, but Holt has taken their innermost thoughts, wrapped them beautifully in verse packages, and presented them to us--packages that will alter the world of anyone who dares to unwrap these literary IEDs.

Dark, but not cold

Something always seems to temper Holt's rather bleak landscapes in The Harvest: so that after he's taken you through failed marriages told from several points of view, a friend's betrayal, an avuncular pedophile, a stalker, a psychiatric facility filled with troubled, neglected children, and a mass murder, among other circles of modern hell, he'll leave you feeling lucky to have come across this book.
"The Stalker's Villanelle," the chilling account of a man who's about to kill his former wife, has already won critical acclaim and is probably going to enjoy a long life in the anthologies. Of the sonnets, of which there are more than a dozen, there are a number of standouts including "Take Me," the heart-rending but clear-eyed account of a social worker's visit with troubled boys, and "Our Murder," about the details and "sensible absurdities" of divorce, which begins, "The deadliest smile that ever scaled a face", and ends: "Our talking now is just a hollow show; / We murdered conversation weeks ago."
There is light verse here as well and Holt is sometimes very funny, most of all when he's making fun of himself, as in "Godot Revisited." But it's the surgical strikes he performs on himself and others you'll remember longest, I suspect. I bought this book twice because it got soaked in my backpack during a storm, and I knew I'd want it around to dip into now and then. It's dark, yes, but not cold. A fine book.
