The fitting conclusion to a great series

I received a review copy of How to Fight a Dragon's Fury a few weeks before the book actually went on sale. In true spoiler sport fashion, I flipped to the back of the book and read the epilogue. I did the same thing when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out, and I'll do it in the future with other series too. I have to know if a series I have invested myself in is going to end well or if I'm going to be disappointed. I am here to tell you that the twelfth and final installment of Cressida Cowell's popular series did not disappoint.

From the time the series started in 2004, the books have been growing in length. How to Train Your Dragon was a mere 224 pages compared to the behemoth 472 pages that is How to Fight a Dragon's Fury. The main plot lines of this final book involve crowning the King of the Wilderwest (Hiccup Horrendous or Alvin the Treacherous) and a showdown between dragonkind (led by the dragon Furious) and humankind. The dragons have rebelled and believe that they must destroy humanity or risk being destroyed themselves. Only one boy, Hiccup, believes that the world is not black and white. He believes that the two races can coexist and there can be peace between the two. The problem is that he has to convince the enormous dragon Furious this. He also has to do this while being undermined and plotted against by Alvin and his mother the witch.

The writing in this book was beautiful at times and made me forget I was reading aimed at a young boy. "Love never dies [ . . . ] Once we love, we cannot forget, though the flesh hardens around the wound that once bled, though it be buried in one hundred years of chains and twisted around with cruel, growing thorns of the choking forest." I think this quote sums up the series. This is more than an adventure series about riding and fighting dragons. This is a coming of age series, and it's also a love story. Don't mistake me. It's not your traditional love story. It's about a boy whose heart was so pure that he saw the world not as it was but as it could be, as it should be. Peace. Harmony. Love.

However, as great a character as Hiccup is, my favorite character in the series grew to be Fishlegs. To reference Harry Potter, Fishlegs is the Neville of this series. He started off a pathetic, little boy whose character and our knowledge of the character grew with each book. In this final installment, he not only comes into his own, but discovers who his father is. I won't spoil it for you, but their interaction will make you proud of Fishlegs. The Epilogue at the end of the book was a nice touch, and it was written by an adult Hiccup. In it, he reflects on his life and whether or not he was a success or failure. He also explains why we cannot see dragons anymore, but assures the readers that they are still present, just hiding. Lastly, he encourages readers to make the world a better place, in case the dragons ever do come out of hiding. I'm sad to see the series end, but I appreciate the author not milking the series and dragging it out indefinitely. I'll definitely pass this series on to my son when he is old enough, and I look forward to reading it with him when the time comes!

Best series ever- sorry to see it end

This series is by far the best we've read, and like so many others have noted, my son and I are so sad that there will be no more adventures with Hiccup and his crew. The books are SO much better than the movies and very different. We have hoped for a long time now that they might make movies from the books- true to the characters and stories in them. How much fun would naughty little Toothless (always pooping where he's not meant to and eating things he shouldn't) and the wildly clever Camacazi, and the crude and crass Gobber....it is a mystery why it hasn't already been done!

Essential Reading

Plenty of books obsessed with scandal and buzz words in the vein of Weekly World News have been written on the subject of celebrity death. The idea of a book that approaches this suggest with respect, intelligence, and a little book of good old-fashioned dark humor is a rare thing indeed. Which makes The Portable Obituary all the better. This is an enormously entertaining, insightful, and fascinating read. Essential for anyone who wants a book that actually knows what it's talking about.

A Scare a Minute!

Looking for a good scare? Want a story that makes you think twice about turning out the lights? Well, this is it! Death Loves Me Not wastes no time with a ghost haunting our heroine from the opening pages. Ms. Tee introduces us to Eden, and right away, your heart goes out to this young woman. Who among us didn't feel 'different' or left out, in our teenage years? Was there never a time when your parents didn't 'get' you? Of course, Eden faces so much more than simple teen angst.

Whether we share Eden's helplessness at her failure to save one girl, or when to our horror, hundreds die, or her wonder when she realizes Stud loves her, this story has it all. And danger lurks around every page. Interwoven we find true friendship, love, and budding romance. As I learned when reading Ms. Tee's romance books, she is a true master of tugging at the heart strings (When Saffi March lost her baby, I mean...I... sorry, got a little sidetracked there. Just read 'When Fangirls Cry, o.k.?)

As a fan of horror from the likes of Koontz, and King, this is one of the most original tales of this genre I have encountered. Nothing is truly obvious, and we are kept guessing about everything, from the true nature of Will and Stud, to the identity of the little girl in pink. While reading Death Loves Me Not, the flashlight, and the 1911, were never far from hand. Chilling!

Creepy and Scary

I really loved this book. I was on the fence about buying this book at first, I mean what would a romance author know about writing a horror? Well she completely blow that thought out of the water within the first couple of chapters. The book is a great late night read, plus it scared me and creeped me out at the same time.What more could you ask for in a horror?

While I adore both Marian Tee's YA romances and her adult ones, this book is what made me a loyal fan. She took this story line and made it into something new and fresh. I would defiantly buy any other books she writes, they are just that good.

Not bad...

...but it would benefit from another pass through the hands of an editor.

The story, overall, is interesting, somewhat suspenseful, and not really like anything else I have read. The author gives you just enough information to keep you interested, without spoiling it with too much backstory at any one time. The creepy moments are just creepy enough to make you wonder what might be hiding in the shadows or under your bed when you're not looking.

My main complaints, and I have two:
The first is with the editing. There are numerous misspellings and words missing completely from sentences. They weren't glaring problems, but just noticeable enough that it detracted from a smooth read. And it seemed to get a little worse the farther into the story you got.
My other complaint had to do with time transition in the story. I found myself lost a couple of times in the jump from present to past and had to backtrack to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It wasn't as seamless as it could have been, but it wasn't a deal-breaker, either.

All in all, if you're looking for a supernatural story, just chock full of ghosts and demons and murder, this is your baby. The story line is a fresh take on the genre and is handled in such a way as to keep you turning (scrolling) pages to find out what happens next.
But if you're a stickler for the perfectly edited, you might want to wait it out for the update.

Four stars for a creepy read, and I'll be checking out some of the other titles from this author.

Enthralling study of a family- how they deal with LIFE

Terrific read, even though the beginning goes a bit slow. Watching the characters develop, blossom, respond to challenges- plus the historical angle of the last 30 years in America, add up to a fascinating examination of how one family functioned together. This is more of a real life romance. Not the starry kind of looking-across-the-room at each other and "falling" in love. This is how true love develops and how a husband and wife realize the importance of the other. This is a love story that focuses on how real life impacts love.
Read it and then get your hands on everything Morsi has written. Her delightful (and humorous) earlier books will keep you laughing, while looking at interesting heroines who are NOT beautiful on the outside, but find their beauty in other ways. Morsi is my favorite- and that is saying a lot, considering how many great romance writers there are!

Being a huge fan of Moresi, I was excited to read Suburban Renewal. Again, she has created a page turner until the end.
Suburban Renewal introduces you to Corrie and her husband Sam. After 25 years of marriage, we peek into their morning routine of coffee and reading the paper. Without waring, Corrie brings up the "D" word ~ divorce.
Like no other novel that I have had the pleasure of reading, Moresi takes us back 25 years prior to when the couple first meets and falls in love. We learn the struggles that Corrie & Sam have to deal with over the years which begin with teenage pregnancy. Corrie's mother does not approve of Sam and is ashamed of her careless daughter. Corrie and Sam choose to get married and have their daughter, Lauren. With little money, the couple moves into a garage apartment and try to make ends meet. Corrie's mother is trying to swallow the choices that she has made until she learns that Corrie is pregnant with her second child.
Suburban Renewal is filled with Corrie & Sam's struggles - from his father coming back into his life, raising teenagers, unemployment, AIDS and suicide.
One aspect of Moresi's writing that I love is that her stories are not happy from the beginning to the end. Meaning, they are true to life and the struggles that we endure on a daily basis. Sometimes we have a happy ending, sometimes not. But, it we have people in our lives to lend us love and support, that will help us to get through anything.

Once again, in her quiet, understated way, Pamela Morsi captures the essence of what makes a simple life worth living, and an everyday person -- extraordinary and worth knowing. Her characters do not save the world from super villains or dodge bullets; instead, they live our own lives. We recognize ourselves in them. We share their pain and their joys, and we feel that if they can do it, so can we.
Corrie had great plans at eighteen: college, a career. Then she became pregnant, and all that changed. Sam did not see this as a disaster. He was only too happy to propose. They started a life together.
A lot happens in twenty-five years: a child, then another one. A business, then another. Old friends, new friends. Death, new life, new generations. Urban sprawl, economic ups and downs. Everything impacts a family. Everything could destroy it, or strengthen it. Pam Morsi takes us along on Corrie and Sam's life journey, and we root and cry for them, because they could be us.
Pamela Morsi's latest novel couldn't be better titled. Without fanfare or grand parades, through trials and tragedies, her characters find the strength to renew themselves constantly. They face disaster and destruction, and renovate themselves and their environment without faltering. We close the book with a feeling of hope: we can have this too, because it's not something Sam and Corrie were given on a golden platter. They worked hard to earn what they achieved. Suburban Renewal is a story of success in everyday life.

Especially for those needing venture capital the book provides sound advice on how to convince others that your business is worth supporting. Has an excellent section on financing and shows some sample business plans.

The best book ever written about gerbils, "Gerbils: The Complete Guide to Gerbil Care" contains amazingly accurate information about gerbil care, breeding and health issues - so accurate that I would even recommend taking this book to your vet with you to help them better diagnose your gerbils' ailments. There is a chapter on fun things to do with your gerbils, including gerbil art projects and training gerbils, as well as sections on housing, feeding, taming, breeding, showing gerbils and coping with gerbil loss. Just about every aspect of owning gerbils is covered in this wonderfully written book, as told from the perspective of one of the top gerbil breeders in the US. Despite her expertise and attention to factual detail, Donna Anastasi's book is concise and fun to read, enhanced with beautiful photographs taken by Ellen Bellini. I highly recommend this book, having read others that are not quite up to par or even give incorrect information. This book tells it as it is: the glorious truth about owning gerbils from beginning to end of their precious little lives. Enjoy!

I have owned Hamsters for six years straight, and I love them and all rodents in general. I also adore reading. So naturally, I've read almost every rodent book out there. Most of them are satisfactory, but a little outdated. I may be getting Gerbils, so, seeing all of the good reviews fellow Amazonians gave this book, I decided to purchase it. That was a good desicion! This book is easy-to-read, without being simple. It presents everything you need to know about gerbils(in a professional manner that doesn't feel like the author is talking down to you), and more! It includes chapters about showing, breeding, gerbil crafts and playing with your gerbils(and that's just the extras! I have personally emailed the person who wrote this book. She is a judge for the Gerbil Association(I think), a breeder and gerbil exhibitor. Her website is [...] She is located in New Hampshire. Take it from the person who has been searching for the perfect gerbil book for years(and has finally found it)...buy this!

This is the ultimate gerbil care book. It is very easy to read, full of reliable information and great pictures. The best of all, throughout the book you feel Donna's love for gerbils. I strongly recommend this book for all gerbil lovers young and old.

If you have to use Hillman's casebook, you're going to NEED this book.

To my surprise, this book made infinitely more sense than Hillman's "Contract and Related Obligation." I initially passed on it because I thought it would be equally terrible, but I was wrong and I wish I had bought this at the beginning of the year. This covers most of the cases with helpful explanations of the topics. Maybe it was more of a problem with the professor we had, but I wouldn't have survived contracts without this book. It's not long, but it's clear and concise. This was the best "hornbook" I used. If your professor is using Hillman's text, just go ahead and buy this.

This book is fantastic! Explains everything really well. Got this for first year law school and I would keep this to study/review for the bar instead of the textbook. I wish I bought it sooner to read along with the text instead of the review for finals.
