It begins with a general survey of the literature that is either influential or representative of approaches to the structure of Hebrews. The survey is followed by an introduction to the terminology and definitions of discourse analysis, as well as the theory behind the methodology, and describes a procedure for analysing text.

Hebrews is treated as having three sections. The first section of Hebrews (1:1-4:16) demonstrates the organization of the units, the topic of the units, the prominent text, and the relationship of the first section with the rest of the discourse. The second section of Hebrews (4:11-10:25) is described in two parts (4:11-7:28 and 8:1-10:25) because of its length. There is an overlap between the first and second sections in 4:11-16 and between the second and third sections in 10:19-25. Both of these passages have a concluding function for the preceding co-text and a staging function for the following co-text, so that they look backwards and forwards. The third and final section in 10:19-13:25 contains the climax or discourse peak.

The study is concluded with a description of the coherence of the discourse and a presentation of a mental representation of the text.

Not the book I would choose for a class text

This is a well thought-out text that offers good clean insight into the historical background of the Constitution. I, personally, enjoyed reading it. My students, however, glaze over on the first page. It is written as more of a historical narrative and offers none of the washed out "end of chapter" ammenitites that we have come to rely upon. No powerpoints, test banks, etc.... It is simply too much of a "chunky monkey" that puts the reader in the position of intensely reading the material and constructing complex notes. This is the text I wish my students would eagerly read and engage themselves in, but then there is reality. Verdict - for use as an undergratuate class text - no. For use as a personal research primer or graduate text - yes.

This book is a wonderful resource for someone interested in learning about the constitution. This book walks you through the constitution line by line explaining and giving examples from actual court cases along the way. It's a little bit old, but I think it's definitely worth reading as a first look at the constitution.

About the Author
Robert Bauman is a professor of biology and chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. He teaches microbiology and human anatomy and physiology. He received an M.A. degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in biology from Stanford University.

His research interests have included the morphology and ecology of freshwater algae, the cell biology of marine algae (particularly the deposition of cell walls and intercellular communication), and environmentally triggered chromogenesis in butterflies. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Texas Community College Teacher's Association (TCCTA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and The Lepidopterist's Society. Buy the third edition!!!!

The third and fourth edition are almost exactly the same!!! The pages and chapters even match up that's how similar they are! The 3rd edition is selling for about $40 used or $70 new for the hardcover so do not waste your money on this edition!

No teacher is going to require you buy the 4th edition, you will absolutely be covered with the 3rd. Also, don't buy the lab manual on here because school's tend to create their own hybrid manual specific to that University that you will have to order from their book store.

Beloved Textbook

This was the text for my undergrad microbiology class. Just finished my Micro class in med school...and once again it was my lifesaver (kind of annoying being forced to spent $1300 on the madated ebook package that I don't use...but I digress).

Firstly, this book is great because it's highly readable. It's not a dry text. Bauman clearly loves his topic and it shows. For example, in the opening section, he discusses Leeuwenhoek...the first guy to ever "see" microbes. He was tailor in the Netherlands who made his own microscopes to inspect wool...and eventually began looking at all sorts of things close up...including protozoa. And suddenly, we realized we weren't alone...that there was a world within our world (seriously...google "leeuwenhoek" and read his wiki page...that a guy worth knowing about).

In the rabies section there's a story about a mother who took her son to Louis Pasteur right after he'd been bitten by a rabid dog (Pasteur was at work on a rabies vaccine at the time)...the boy became one of a handful of people to ever survive rabies (he wound up working in Pasteur's labs as an adult...I googled that because it interested me)...and for kicks I also, looked up a translations of Pasteur's paper on his vaccine. It's kinda sad because it involved injecting tons of rabbits with rabies...but given how devastating rabies is...to humans and animals alike...it was certainly worthwhile work.

Anyway I don't know why...but "fleshing out" the story of diseases or the history of microbiology really gives the facts a much more lasting context. It makes it all more important...and sort of helps me remember that there's a reason why I pore over these textbooks...that we're (as students of science) a continuation of the work and effort that's come before.

I feel like a lot of that gets lost in our modern education system and it's a shame (especially with internet...when it seems like the reverse should be true...it's never been easier to get the bigger picture of the story)

I don't mean to suggest that the book is long-winded...its not...it gets to the point...with a few memorable sentences strewn in when there's some interesting back story to a bug. And those little facts also helped me when I was making memory aids to keep all the microbes/viruses/fungi/helminths/(and their respective drugs) straight.

TL;DR: Buy this book. You'll actually want to read it.

This text is very helpful with its readable language and diagrams. It provides a sufficient review of basic biology and is written so that one could technically skip chapters and still understand the topics. The text's website and CD provide excellent review tests, flashcards, and animations.

However in some sections and chapters, the author has not organized the flow very well, especially the immunity chapters, and the text goes a little too deep for a 1-term college microbiology class. Its strengths outweigh the negatives enough to give it 5 stars.

My kids have loved him for years!

Given the craze of the elf, I was hoping to find something that wouldn't scare my daughter but still had the same idea behind it. I was thrilled to find Randall! We have had him for 3 years. Our daughters always like trying to find him each morning to see what he's up to. I'd highly recommend if you want something similar to the elf, but not the price.

Get all info before you buy used items

I ordered 2 of these books in used condition and by different sellers. The book usually comes with other items (naughty and nice reports, and a stuffed reindeer) I read all "used" descriptions by different sellers most explained that only the book was for sale. I "thought" I happened to find 2 books with the items. I read the description a few times, my husband read it. I wanted to make sure I was getting 2 full sets. I ordered both sets. My kids book was delivered with no reindeer or report cards. My nieces called me the next day and they only got the book also. I would have bought both of them brand new if both sellers had a better description. And one of the books was listed in great condition but smelled like a dirty diaper. I won't buy used anymore.

Wonderful alternative to Elf on The Shelf

We love Randall and use him in a similar way that Elf on the Shelf are used. The difference is Randall can be touched, toted around and carried and turns out just fine. :) Randall comes with the little plush deer, a book about Randall and some sheets of naughty and nice reports. We have never used the naughty or nice reports. We do what I call the 25 days of Randall and usually my little man takes a photo for each day leading up to Christmas with Randall occasionally I will just randomly pose Randall by himself for some of the days. It leads up to 25 days of memories leading up to the Christmas season and a possible alternative to Elf on the Shelf that has a lot of possibilities. Such as allowing the child to touch him. Using the naughty and nice reports etc. He is also cheaper I believe than the Elf on the Shelf.

Norman Morrow is a master storyteller and a humorist without peer. Father Brennan’s world becomes as clear as life and my own little world is now the vague dream. How can that be, you ask? Well, it’s the unique mode of Irish storytelling that author Norman Morrow has unleashed from somewhere between a sip of Jameson and his own fertile imaginative visions.

Pub humor and ancient mysteries from secret places beneath the Vatican, all put together in a tightly weaved fabric that is the saga of Father Brennan and his eclectic band of pals who, with amazing wit, conspire daily from the backroom of the local pub. You will also learn a lot about the Zen of fly fishing the rivers of Ireland.

Never a wasted opportunity for humor, but there’s even more in these pages. The story is also interspersed with poignancy and depth of character that had me riding a roller coaster of emotion, sometimes laughing through tears and sometimes truly concerned about a character’s well-being or the outcome of a tense situation. There is, however, instilled early-on in the back of the reader’s mind, that no matter how dire the circumstance, Fr. Brennan will emerge as the conquering hero.

A great literary work and highest stars assigned. This reader looks forward to the next installment, as I know there is plenty of adventure left in the life of Father James Brennan and much more craic.

An Irish Tale with Fishy Twists!

An Irish Yarn with Fishy Twists
I always had the opinion that fishing was a boring occupation that men used as an excuse to get away from family life for a day lazing by the river! However, this book has set me right on that, for I know now that fly-fishing is indeed a scientific art. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a boring book about fishing – far from it! It is a highly entertaining tale of an Irish Parish priest who is deceptively wily and intelligent. When you come to the end of the story of the ‘con trick’ (I won’t spoil anything by explaining this) you come to a phase in the middle of the book where, to be honest, it almost lost me. However, it’s worth sticking at because the story suddenly takes a twist that will remind you of a ‘soap’ programme with gossip spreading so thick and fast that suddenly an ‘innocent’ parish priest becomes something he is not in the eyes of the community, so much so that it comes to the notice of Rome. It then takes another curious twist which is worthy of Dan Brown or Simon Toyne as we are thrown into the ‘underworld’ of the church. However, fear not, for our hero priest has the whole thing under control!
This book will surprise you as it surprised me. It is a humorous story with some serious undertones in places. I feel I must warn you that you will be subjected to sudden bursts or snorts of laughter which could be detrimental to your well-being if you happen to be eating or drinking at the time. Well done, Norman, this book is a triumph.

Woman in their 60's and older will feel the emotion because it is their story. Younger woman need to read this so they understand the woman's movement and help move on. We cannot become complacent. We still earn only 74 cents to men's dollar. Abortion is still threatened. Universal health care is still a dream as is universal child care and a decent minimum wage. We have work still left to accomplish
