CHEEGHA - The Call from Waziristan, the last outpost, by Ghulam Qadir Khan Daur

"A true story of happiness and Romance, of curse and betrayal, from the remotest corner of the world, Waziristan."

"Waziristan remains a mystery and a puzzle for most of the world. Reports of violence and terrorism are frequently associated with its name. For people living here, life has become a hell of uncertainty. A drone strike could kill them or their family members one day, a suicide bomber the next or action by the Pakistan army the day after. Is this all there is to Waziristan?

Ghulam Qadir Khan, sets out to show us the true face of Waziristan. He takes us to the heart of this society. We meet his family and those living in his village Darpa Khel in North Waziristan Agency. We become familiar with individuals. We meet and fall in love with members of his family. We are also introduced to the essential features of tribal society.

Unlike the previous authors, Ghulam Qadir is the only one from the area itself... The author is ideally placed to write on Waziristan. He is that rare tribesman from this area who is writing about his own people. Because Ghulam Qadir combines scholarship and experience in the field as an administrator, he is a trustworthy guide. Educated at some of the finest institutions of Pakistan - Lawrence College, Murree, and Edwards College, Peshawar - Ghulam Qadir joined the civil service of Pakistan in 1984. He has worked in the field as Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent in the Tribal Areas. In more senior postings, he has been in charge of the Tribal Areas in the planning department, and has also held the post of Secretary of Law and Order for the Tribal Areas." Professor Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies, American University, Washington D.C.

The Author Ghulam Qadir Khan Daur belongs to North Waziristan Agency, Tribal Areas of Pakistan. He did his masters in Economics and attended ISS, The Hague, Netherlands and IDPM, Manchester University, England to specialize in rural development. He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1984 and served as Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent in the tribal areas. In senior positions, he was Secretary Law and Order and Secretary Finance for tribal areas.

Since the rise of militancy, he represented tribal areas in Dubai process, Wilton Park conferences in England and almost all briefings /presentations made to local and foreign delegations and has written articles on the tribal areas for reputed newspapers. He is the founding Chairperson of www.thetribaltimes.com, a web magazine on tribal areas and the Chairperson of the Society for the Protection of Rights of Tribes (SPORT) which is advocating and raising awareness against discrimination against tribal people. He has dedicated himself to improve the lot of tribesmen. Ghulam Qadir Khan combines scholarship and experience making him a trustworthy guide. He is ideally placed to write about Waziristan, his own people.

Review

"Cheegha is a revealing book of the atrocities that have been, and are still, committed against people of the tribal areas and which have made life hell for them in their own land. It is an interesting eye-opener and must not be missed by all those interested in monitoring developments in Fata. It should be made 'compulsory reading' for all those government servants who are detailed for duty in Fata". Ambassador (Rtd) Ayaz Wazir. The News Sunday January 18, 2015

"A fascinating account of life in one of the most turbulent regions of the world. Cheegha unlocks the many mysteries about North Waziristan and challenges the many perceptions about its people, culture, traditions and code of life. The book is a must-read for anyone who wishes to understand what happened in Waziristan. Ghulam Qadir Khan certainly is most qualified to give his version of this black chapter in Waziristan's history ". Jahangir Khattak, Co-Director,  Center for Community and Ethnic Media, City University of New York . Viewsweek 09/7/15

"The first serious scholarly work on Pukhtunwali, a must read for policy advisors on Fata. Since 9/11attacks, FATA has been portrayed an area totally lawless, with no respectfor human dignity and devoid of any norm of civilised world. Ghulam QadirKhan's book Cheegha is an excellent effort to remove these misgivings. Headvocates that militancy is a fatal threat to the ways of the fathers. Theirculture which is so fulfilling, inclusive and time tested is being replaced byfaceless forces alien to this part of the world in the name of religion". Habibullah Khan,The News on Sunday.

A new book by a Waziristan native captures the pain civilians have endured in Pakistan's Waziristan tribal region, where thousands have been killed and millions displaced in a convoluted conflict that saw the region's tribal society decimated by radical Islamists and security forces.Ghulam Qadir Khan Daur's Cheegha - the Call is an invaluable contribution to understanding the conflict in Waziristan.
Nearly half of FATA civilians have experienced displacement as a consequence of a war in which outside forces have often encouraged violence as part of competition for global and regional dominance. It is striking that none of the warring parties claimed to be fighting for the rights of FATA Pashtuns or to free them from oppression and underdevelopment.
Daur, a Pakistani government bureaucrat, has delivered an emotional plea for understanding the grief and suffering of Waziristan. The direness of the situation in his homeland appears to have persuaded him to take this approach instead of a dry, fact-based analysis. His storytelling transports readers to his picturesque mountain home where generosity, loyalty, and rectitude once ruled supreme. In Waziristan, Daur writes, his tribal chieftain father successfully prevailed over emotional youth and haughty officials to keep the peace and slowly steer a new generation toward modernity and prosperity through education.
Daur attempts to answer the question: Why did Pakistan let Waziristan be destroyed when its residents had done nothing to warrant the anguish they face?
"The security forces destroy whole villages during military operations without getting a militant," he writes. "[But] the breeding of militants continues to this day. Some train them, others fund them and some others protect them. Who is doing all this - no one knows."
Daur has been vocal about why he wrote the book and what he expects to achieve. "I have felt that the voice of the resident of the tribal areas is not being heard," he told a Pakistani TV channel. "I want the elites in Islamabad and [the eastern prosperous province of] Punjab and international community to know about our pain and losses."
Cheegha is informed by Daur's decades-long career as a senior security and administration official in FATA. He is not afraid to criticize the archaic governance regime Islamabad employs to keep FATA tormented as a backwater..
Daur's writing is also motivated by a desire to correct the narrative about Pashtuns, whose image in the West was shaped by British and Pakistani administrators often invoking the "noble savage" to understand their culture, history, and identity. "Now is a high time to tell our story from an indigenous perspective," he said.
As the West reflects on the nearly 15-year war on terrorism, Cheegha should be required reading for policymakers, diplomats, aid workers, journalists, and analysts. The book is an antidote to the stereotypes and preconceived notions about one of the main theaters for the struggle against violent extremism.
Daur's prognosis of the main problem in Waziristan and the tribal areas also sounds a universal truth for tribal societies and ungoverned spaces across the Muslim world.

I just got done reading this book and absolutely loved it. This is the book I would recommend to anyone who wishes to understand Pashtoon culture.

I had been looking for books on Pashtoons (or Pushtoons), largest tribal society in the world, but my search was unsuccessful as I was looking for something that would not only provide some history, but most importantly explain basic tenets of Pashtunwail (ethical code) that all pashtoons live and die by. Finally, someone among pashtoons, highly educated and competent, took the time to put it in words and pass it on to the world to understand Pashtoons, their culture and traditions.

Growing up in Pakistan as a pashtoon, I came to experience the culture first hand, however there were many aspects of traditions and tribal laws that I was less familiar with, and this book does a wonderful job of explaining all the tribal laws, how it impacts individual lives. What I liked most about the book is how author explains basic principles of Pushtunwali (ethical code) by providing a personal story of people whose lives were impacted by each tenet of this code, for better or worse; for example, one of the tenets of Pashtunwali (ethical code) is Badal (revenge) that it must be exercised, regardless of time frame, it then goes into a story about an individual who used to work for the author, whose son avenged his grandfather’s death more than 40 years later and how they went about dealing with an issue by referring back to Pushtunwali (ethical code) to help guide their life and future actions.

While reading this book, it makes references to other tenets of pashtunwali (ethical code), and you must keep reading the book in order to understand all of them as these tenets are linked and affected depending on actions taken. While explain a tenet called Badal (revenge) it makes references to others, but you must keep on reading in order to understand them all.

These are the same Pashtoons who rescued US Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell (Reference book Lone Survivor) from taliban by following their basic ethical code and protected him at all cost.

Substance Abuse; Info for School Counselors - Review
By H. Wilson
This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.

Wounded, by Emily Mayhew

Wounded traces the journey made by a casualty from the battlefield to a hospital in Britain. It is a story told through the testimony of those who cared for him - stretcher bearers and medical officers, surgeons and chaplains, orderlies and nurses - from the aid post in the trenches to the casualty clearing station and the ambulance train back to Blighty.

We feel the calloused hands of the stretcher-bearers; we see the bloody dressings and bandages; we smell the nauseating gangrene and, at London's stations, the gas clinging to the uniforms of the men arriving home. There are the unspeakable injuries: the officer with a hole in his torso so big the doctor can see the sky beyond him; a man with no legs holding a hymnbook for a man with no arms.

Together, the experiences in Wounded encapsulate what it was to fight, live, and die for four long years at the Western Front. The first comprehensive account of medical care at the Western Front, Wounded is an homage to the courageous and determined men and women who saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Beautifully Written, Deeply Moving
By LJude
This is the certainly the shortest and in some sense the narrowest of the several World War I histories that I have read, but it was also one of the most engaging. It is carefully constructed, deeply researched, and gorgeously written.

The materials are inherently fascinating because, for the first time on a large scale, modern medicine, with aseptic techniques was employed alongside the battlefield. And, for the first time, the instruments of war had become so destructive that the injuries were more appalling and gruesome than ever before.

The book is organized by category, starting with stretcher bearers, then proceeding to other categories such as ambulance drivers, nurses, chaplains, doctors, and some of those who were among the wounded. Each chapter features the accounts of several different people from the category. It is real "history" -- the author has drawn heavily on diaries, letters, interviews, records, and historical accounts.

With these materials, the author has taken some very understandable and wonderful liberties to add depth and feeling, add detail and color, where the historical materials were more thin. This never feels fabricated or contrived. It is all genuine and persuasive.

The book feels even shorter than it is because it is impossible to put down. Every sentence has a poetic lilt. Every chapter has a thoughtfully calibrated architecture.

This is a special book. Any reader who comes to it will develop an appreciation for the texture, feeling, and horrors of the Great War. And also a sense of the poignancy of loss, the resilience of the human spirt, and the magnificent wonder of so many good-hearted and talented people who tended the wounded.

When I finished the text, I didn't want to stop, and proceeded to the footnotes. They, too, were well-written, informative, and sometimes even moving.

A Worthy, if not "New," Contribution to the Literature
By Thomas M. Sullivan
As an inveterate WWI history buff, I welcome any addition to the literature. And so I very much looked forward to reading this re-telling of the experiences of many players directly involved in the recovery, initial care, transportation, and formal medical treatment of the Great War’s soldiers and their unprecedented, and unprecedentedly gruesome, injuries.

My problem with the book, and this is not a criticism of the author or her obviously considerable efforts, is that this story has been told before, and told better and more comprehensively, in Lyn Macdonald’s irreplaceable “The Roses of No Man’s Land” (Atheneum, originally published in 1980, and available on Amazon).

The principal difference is in the respective authors’ sources. Mayhew necessarily relies on formal memoirs and other testimonies primarily written after the war by participants in the medical theater now long deceased. Macdonald undertook her work at a time when the players were still alive and able to respond to her historian’s questions and story-telling guidance. The result was a peerless amalgam of first-person observations unique for their intensity and poignancy.

Let me put a positive spin on all this. “Wounded” is a very worthwhile treatment of its subject and, indeed, Mayhew does a particularly good job of describing the evolution of transportation methods for the wounded over the course of the conflict, a subject only tangentially covered in “Roses.” And if you are intrigued by this book and particularly its reliance on participants’ testimonies, then you have a treat coming if you resolve to spend your Winter reading Lyn Macdonald’s series of WWI “year” books, including without limitation “1914,” “1915,” “The Somme,” “They Called It Passchendaele,” “To the Last Man,” etc. Having read just about very WWI history I could get my hands on, I assure you that none are more edifying and, perhaps it goes without saying, heart-rending, than these.

easy to read, fascinating, and important
By Jonathan Gawne
I was fortunate enough to be able to read this book before its official release as an Ebook, which for some reason did not have the illustrations working properly. Nevertheless I found it an easy to read, fascinating, and important book on the western front and the great war in general.

It is not a typical history book. The author does not use much in the way of official documents, manuals and after action reports as I would normally expect. Instead, she pieces together the route a wounded British serviceman would take from the front line to the British Hospitals by telling the stories found in memoirs of men, and women, who served in the various jobs along the evacuation route. Unlike the work of Lyn McDonald, where the quotes are offset, Mayhew has written the participants of each chapter into a very readable and coherent narrative.

It's unusual in that each chapter deals with a different 'type' of jobs: stretcher bearer, orderly, hospital train nurse, chaplain, field hospital staff, and even the volunteers who moved the wounded from trains arriving in London onto ambulances that took them to the Blighty Hospitals. Even the medical services to POWs are mentioned. Normally, this type of book I find relies too much on direct (and often erroneous quotes) but pardon the pun when I call it 'ripping well done.'

It opens up a while new area of the war that is not often talked about, and portrays chaplains (well, the good ones) in a whole new light. It's not a technical history of medicine in the war by any means, but a view from the ground up of what wounded soldiers went through, and what their caretakers went through. When you read of the endless hours on their feet during a push, and the sometimes scarce resources they had to work with, you will not look at a nurse, or bearer, or doctor, or orderly, or ambulance driver the same way again.

Why is this book about the British medical system of special interest to those interested in the Americans in WW1? The book makes little mention of the vast medical support supplied to the British by the Americans; the large numbers of doctors and specialists who volunteered before 1917, and the even larger number of medical personnel who were attached to British medical units to gain experience while waiting for their A.E.F. components to get overseas. Thus the British medical system had a great influence on how the Americans developed their own.

Very Highly recommended. Not only for those interested in military medicine, but WW1 in general, and for how people can, and do, rise to the occasion to help their fellow man.

useless
By SLP VB
I am thrilled I only paid a couple of dollars for this. I was hoping for tricks and apps I hadn't heard of to help teach reading. But the best apps mentioned include safari, the clock app and the camera app!?! Thanks for nothing. I am dyslexic, and I am a speech pathologist specializing in reading. The descriptions of the reading process, reading teaching and how to help are SO basic, even a parent with no experience teaching reading will roll her eyes. And, the information about IEPs, and the intervention process in school is WRONG. The RTI process is described like it is a service or program, when in reality, RTI is the process by which the school intervenes too help children who are struggling. It is NOT a 30 min pull out instruction time. And I would love to meet this person who was reading 600 word per minute in sixth grade. I really hope this book doesn't reach many people who truly want accurate information about dyslexia and how to work to improve reading ability. The most important parts of teaching reading and spelling are only mentioned by way of naming the most popular trademarked programs available. The size and type of fonts preferable were discussed more than enhancing reading and spelling ability through instruction (with or without technology). What a waste.

Important, well written, timely book
By J. P. McKinney
This book will be welcomed by everyone who has dyslexia, and by prents and professionals who work with people with dyslexia. It is also a great book for anybody who wants a solid introduction to techniques and technologies that can improve study habits and lead to greater academic achievement.

Dr. Nuttall knows what he's talking about. He is, himself, dyslexic, a condition, he says, that was at first misdiagnosed, since he is also legally blind. This book reminds me of those other books written by scholars who have been afflicted with the disorders they write about: Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, a Yale psychologist with bipolar disorder, Dr. Temple Grandin, a Colorado State University professor with autism, and Carlton Davis, the internationally known architect, with bipolar disorder. In each case, as in the Nuttalls' book, we learn from persons who have been there, who have conquered or are conquering their afflictions, and are generously telling the rest of us how they do it.

At one point while reading this book I thought, "Wow, I wish I had read this 50 years ago when I was a post-doctoral fellow, learning to treat 'slow learning' children at the Montreal Children's Hospital Learning Centre." I now feel certain, and I believe my mentor, the late distinguished Dr. Sam Rabinovitch, would agree with me, that many of the children we saw then would today be diagnosed with dyslexia. They were children of normal or above average intelligence, without other psychological disorders except for lousy self-esteem, a byproduct, I believe, of not being able to read. Of course, this book could never have been written then. It details with wonderful precision, the modern technological advances that can improve the lives of children who have difficulty reading, writing, and studying; it outlines the neurophysiological basis of dyslexia (thanks to MRI research, also a modern medical innovation); and it provides a compendium of the laws that are in place to help children so afflicted. Moreover the long descriptive list of apps for the iPad and other mobile devices that are useful in helping children (and adults) to learn is itself worth the very modest price of the book.

I highly recommend this book. Despite the evidence of careful scholarship, it's written in an interesting, easy flowing, and jargon free style. You'll get to learn about the various assistive technologies that can help us lead more productive, satisfying lives and perhaps be able to help yourself or someone you know to do just that. I loved it.
