Repetitive and rambling

According to the intro, "How to be the Luckiest Person Alive" is supposed to "unleash the core that will drive you from desire to ambition to meaning." Readers can be forgiven if they are still a confused. This book isn't The Secret and it's not going to help you figure out what your life means. It also won't talk about luck.

So what does the book actually cover? A lot. An awful lot. Everything from whether to buy a house, what to do when you're suddenly wealthy, why to avoid college, and how to fire employees. It's nominally about some very high-level generalities about running startup businesses.

The biggest problem is that everything is in lists. Long lists. Long lists with little supporting detail or emphasis. Any real points quickly get lost as he races from one bullet to the next, with no hint which is essential, which is a joke and which is just filler. In one classic chapter, he rattles off over 80 "rules" for a business. Some some like crucial, vital pieces of information like "get a customer" and "be profitable". These rules sound like they can make or break a business and should always be followed. Other rules sound like handy tips, like "have killer parties" and "at Christmas, donate money to every customer's favorite charity." By the time you've droned through ten pages, everything blurs and the really key ideas (whichever they were) are lost. And since it is just a long list of rules, most readers will forget them before the chapter is done.

After he goes through several anecdotes including an uncomfortable chapter when he seems fixated on how much sex and drugs he did in college, the useful content more or less fizzes out. There's no real conclusion and nothing to wrap it up. Instead, as if to ensure that we forget everything, we get almost 100 pages of direct reprints of various blog articles which are, you guessed it, more lists. And since they were blog posts, each chapter is disconnected from everything which came before and after.

He writes very well as a blogger. The list format is a natural fit and writing short, self-contained essays is a virtue. As a book however, it is a failure. My advice is to subscribe to his blog and skip the book.

As an Altucher fan, I am very disappointed

I am a regular reader of James Altucher's blog, and immediately purchased this book when I learned of it. I was excited to read this, but am very disappointed. The book is basically a copy and paste rehash of his blog posts. On his blog, he admits that it took him three weeks to put this book together. It shows. The book is full of misspellings and typos. One of the chapters invites readers to leave a comment in the comment section - obviously something that should have been edited out when pasting from his blog.

I really wanted to like this book, however it is so sloppy that it is almost unreadable.

This Book Eats Your Time Worse Than All Those Blogs & FaceBook

This book falls into the Janis Joplin category "It's so good don't ever start." It's really hard not to read another chapter. I found myself reading instead of working. I am buying more copies for my entrepreneur buddies.

Altucher has screwed up more deals, passed up more opportunities, and utterly thrown away more money than anybody I know. He tells you exactly how he did it. As he points out, you learn most from your mistakes, and he's learned a lot.

I've read the other reviews. They all are truthful. Your expectations will become your reality.

So just buy the book, OK? Your Margarita last night cost more. But this is funny and lasts longer.

Arden Huntley's naïve understanding of relationships partially comes from her mother, who taught her in word and by example that one person always takes care of the other as a gardener nurtures flowers. Arden fully believes this theory and has built an identity around it: she is "recklessly loyal." She reaches a breaking point when she starts to feel that her love and support are underappreciated, especially by her boyfriend and her best friend. Seeking solace online, Arden discovers "Tonight the Streets Are Ours," a blog written by a guy named Peter in New York City. The teen not only finds comfort in Peter's writing, but begins to feel invested in his life and happiness. Sales understands the intense bond that readers can have with bloggers and she uses this to propel Arden into a transformative road trip to find Peter. Some readers, particularly those touched by adoption, may find themselves taken out of the story when they are introduced to a character with an unusual backstory: a white boy who was adopted by Asian American parents. However, there's no acknowledgement of how unique and against expectations it is. It's unclear how this creative decision serves the plot or characters and given that it occurs during a pivotal moment in the book, it's worth noting. An interesting story, but an unlikable main character made it not click with me

Tonight the Streets Are Ours is a story about breaking boundaries and discovering who you are apart from other people. The plot follows Arden who is, as the synopsis states, recklessly loyal – so she was dubbed by the doll company that made a doll out of her when she was a child, and she’s let that definition define her throughout her whole life. Arden believes it is her responsibility to take care of the people she loves, which is a wonderful goal, of course, but she does it to the exclusion of everything else, including taking care of herself. She has a best friend who she met because she made a huge sacrifice for her when she was a child (you’ll find out about that when you find out about the doll) and who she has been sacrificing for and watching out for ever since. She also has a boyfriend who she supports in all of his endeavors. And it’s especially important to take care of everyone right now because her endlessly mother just suddenly left without a backward glance and moved three hundred miles away. Arden copes by reading a blog called “Tonight the Streets Are Ours,” written by a boy about her age who she feels like she connects with more than anyone she knows in real life. When everything in both of their lives seems to go awry, she seeks him out, hoping she’ll find something she’s been missing.

What fed my addiction:

Family matters.
The situation with Arden’s family is complicated. Her mom disappeared after always focusing solely on her family, and Arden is so angry that she won’t talk to her. In the meantime, her dad has thrown himself into his work, barely paying any attention at all to her and her eleven-year-old brother. Arden feels like she has to pick up the pieces and be the one to hold things together, especially for her little brother. It does not always go well. I liked the concept of the family issues, but I wasn’t that fond of where it all went – I’ll talk about that in the next section, though.

Learning independence.
The funny thing is that while Arden has always felt like she’s taking care of other people, she’s actually very dependent on all of those people – her life revolves around them and she does very little thinking for herself. Arden doesn’t know who she is apart from her best friend and her boyfriend and her family – and she may not be anyone at all. After all, the defining characteristic of her life has always been that she is recklessly loyal – and she strives to live up to that title. Through Arden’s time in NYC, she learns a few things – first of all,, people are not always who you think you are or you’ve defined them to be. And second of all, that she doesn’t have to live a recklessly loyal life – it’s okay to let go sometimes.

The Peter storyline.
Arden doesn’t actually head to NYC to find Peter until relatively late in the book. Maybe if it had happened sooner, I would have liked the book more because I really liked the storyline that involved him. That’s not to say that I actually liked what was happening, because it was very messed up and strange, but it made for an extremely interesting story and I loved the lessons that Arden learned from the whole situation.

What left me wanting more:

Arden herself.
The real problem with this book is that Arden herself is hard to like. She goes through life feeling like she has to fix everyone or watch over them, which automatically leads to a feeling of superiority and that air of superiority starts to get old as the book goes on. I was actually fine with it for the first half of the book or so – I understood why she felt that way and how she had ended up going down that path. I could even see how some of the people in her life really did kind of mess things up when left to their own devices, so it was understandable why Arden felt like she had to police them. But, by midway over the book, I was over it. I was especially frustrated by the way she treated Lindsey – like she was a child who couldn’t do anything right. Even when Lindsey was trying hard to be helpful, Arden was too busy putting her down to notice it. So, yeah, great best friend material. And Arden did kind of learn her lesson about this in the end – but by that time, I was already too frustrated with her to see it as a huge win.

Arden’s mother.
This really made me mad. The implication was that Arden’s mother had been taking care of everyone for so long that she needed to take herself out of the situation in order to fix her own issues. And I get that, I do. I’m a stay-at-home mom who homeschools two of my three kids. My youngest son is adopted and has special needs, and I started homeschooling my older two when my oldest had so many issues at school that it was becoming nightmarish. I get it – putting yourself aside for your kids is hard and frustrating and sometimes overwhelming. Although, honestly, she had two super well-behaved kids who never caused any problems – her biggest issue was the fact that she did a lot for them and no one seemed grateful enough. So she left. Packed her bags and moved three hundred miles away. Sure, she called occasionally, but I had a hard time sympathizing with her. As a mom, I understand the urge to get away – I understand that she needed space, but I don’t understand punishing your kids for the fact that you have issues and completely removing yourself from their lives. Unless you’re a danger to them or your presence is somehow hurting their well-being, in my opinion, that’s never okay.

So, while I liked aspects of this book, an unlikable main character eventually got to me. I still appreciated the overall message of letting go and learning to be yourself without other people, but the journey there wasn’t always fun. I give this book 3/5 stars.

An Absolutely Breathtaking Story

Our online personas seem to be an extension of our lives. But do they even begin to tell the truth?

Like the main character of this book, I feel it necessary to note that I was reading Leila Sales when SHE was just a blogger. I enjoyed her debut of Mostly Good Girls Mostly Good Girls and our course I loved watching her voice develop in This Song Will Save Your Life. Tonight the Streets Are Ours is Sales' masterwork when you consider how advanced it is in terms of the story. Sales' carefully crafted sentences have always ended with a knockout. In TTSAO she brings that craft to the chapters. Every time you think you know what will happen next you find an unexpected twist that hooks you in.

While this story is about many things--music, loneliness, finding yourself, friendship, romance--in the end it is about the stories we tell ourselves. And how we're so often telling the wrong story. Arden always thinks of herself as "recklessly loyal" as if a person can't have another storyline. Lindsey has been a screwup for so long that she hasn't bothered to take responsibility for anything in ages. Readers of any age will enjoy the family dynamics, the nights out with friends and, most importantly, the incredible journey.

It is also a testament to the good friends--the ones we have and the ones we make along the way--and if you ever find yourself alone in this world, this book will keep you company until you find your next adventure.

The story we tell versus the people we are

Arden (ardent?) is seventeen years old and has spent most of her life following her mother's example that happiness comes from being there for other people, and the person she's been there for the most is her best friend Lindsey, who not only can't get out of her own way, but doesn't seem to realize when she's in it. The story opens with Arden taking the blame for Lindsey's marijuana, but Arden has been giving things to Lindsey since they first met, including a coveted trip to Disneyland. Arden is so codependent that even her mother's sudden blow up and departure over not being appreciated doesn't tip her off that she might want to reconsider her choices.

Arden knows she's unhappy, and one night she types her question to the universe into Google's search engine: and gets an answer in the form of the blog "Tonight the Streets Are Ours". She becomes obsessed with it's author Peter and his story, and when her boyfriend Chris disappoints her, she and Lindsey drive from Virginia to New York City to track Peter down- and then the real fun begins as Arden discovers that what people do says a lot more about who they are than the story they tell everyone (and themselves).

Sales made me feel Arden's desperation to be helpful and be loved, and even if the reader could guess the beats to the story before they were revealed, it made sense that Arden (and Lindsey and Peter) wouldn't; they're not clueless, but they are so earnestly attached to their own philosophies about life and happiness that they have blinders on to everything else going on around them. Bianca, the object of Peter's affection and obsession, is the one who seems most in touch with reality, but that understanding comes at a terrible price.

I would recommend this book to fans of realistic young adult fiction.

Excellent Format, Excellent Information

In her helpful book about companion parrot biting behavior, Phoenix Landing volunteer Jenny Drummey offers a flat-out useful tutorial, as well as sound advice, concerning this beaky matter. In the opening chapter, she starts by examining the emotional side of “the bite.” She admits something that, as a bird owner, I wish more owners shared with newbies. “The scars that bites leave behind are certainly physical, but they’re psychological and emotional too.”
Hallelujah.
Starting with a pledge to institute ideas, methods, behavior changes, commitment, environment changes, etc., to reduce or eliminate bites from a bird, the reader is encouraged to keep a journal, develop his or her own “biting plan,” and use tools such as the Bite Analyzer. You can also figure out how likely you are to get bitten during certain behaviors by plugging the behaviors into your own “Bite-o-meter.” Drummey gives short assignments that pull the reader into the text as a participant, not just someone who’s being lectured to.
Even though Drummey did an excellent job of making me feel a part of the lessons and examples as I read, I never felt that she blamed me for the biting behavior I could relate to in the text. I felt instead that she was giving me strategies to deal with the biting behavior when I see it about to happen with one of my parrots or at an event with someone else’s bird.
Throughout the book, Drummey has important tips called “Bite Bits” placed in the margins to attract attention, such as “Parrots do not need a logical reason to be uncomfortable.” The assignments I mentioned are set off by boxes labeled “Try This At Home.” The use of subheadings within chapters also helps break up individual concepts and makes this book an easy one to follow. When you want to check something specific later, the table of contents lists those subheadings, making this an easy reference tool.
One chapter you don’t see many of the “Try This” boxes in is “Biting Solutions That Don’t Work.” The subheading sections of negative ideas in this chapter only get five pages of space, but they clearly express what readers should avoid when working to gain trust and reduce bites from parrots.
Drummey has prepared a no-nonsense guide to why our feathered friends bite in different situations with the heavy emphasis on correcting both our behavior and the bird’s. Her approach appears rooted in positive behavior modification with the human recognizing when the environment is ripe for biting and how to change the situation.

Wonderful book for Parrot Lovers (especially those with nippy babies)

Really helpful book!!!! Helped me realize some things I was doing was spot on compared to what I had read on the Internet. It also gave me many ideas to try. Patience, patience, patience with all birds. This book helped me realize this. I will definitely be using this book quite often to help my bird and me reach goals we need to reach. This book not only will help with biting but other negative behaviors as well. It is not just a one time read. It is an ongoing help guide that you can refer to over and over!!! Great book!!! Definitely worth the purchase!!!!

"Show Me!"...unique, explicit & sadly controversial...

"Show Me!", by Will McBride, NY, St. Martin's Press, 1975, LCCCN 74-30507 (pbk), 176 pgs., large format 8.5" x 12" is a book of photographs with captions by McBride plus significant informative explanatory text by Dr. Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt who discusses how to best present these explicit photographs and the book's sexual content to children and the appropriate ages to do so -- and Helga then appropriately delves into the issues of breast feeding, adolesence, puberal changes, menses, sexual anatomies, pregnancy, masturbation, contraception, sexual behavioral disturbances and veneral disease.

First published in Germany, 1974, -- it became a national best seller. Promoted as "A Picture Book of Sex for Children and Parents", I fear today's society will be inclined to view the book as permissive if not overly licentious. The B/W photographs of genitalia, etc. are explicit and encompass age groups from the very young to adult -- pre-puberal erections and some genital touchings between the sexes is depicted. I am not aware of any book comparable to this illustrated primer that fills the needs of sexual education so well -- but I do recall the apprehension and fury when this book was first marketed, a time before AIDS was discovered and before teen-age pregnancies flourished.

Knowing many parents strenuously object to having public schools provide sex education for their children, this book might be one these parents could utilize to provide illustrated factual information. This book does not mention the bird and the bees.

Blast from the past

I got this book in the 70's when I was working on a teaching degree. In one of my classes we discussed the uproar over it in depth and I wanted to see what all the shouting was about. I had it packed away with my old school books since 1977. I agree, it will offend a heck of a lot of people, but it's an interesting piece of history from the 70's. I'd look at it as more of a curiosity than something anyone would actually use with their children. Like "Our Bodies Ourselves" which also caused a lot of talk at the time, it is part of an era.

this is to teach young kids all about sex. this is more a picture book then a reading book. kids should learn young. this is a good book to have i think. if you do have some thing against nudity then this is not for you. all of the pictures are with the people naturally.
