Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir in 1989, was their seventh such exodus since the arrival of Islam in Kashmir, in the fourteenth century. This was precipitated by the outbreak of Pakistan-sponsored insurgency across Kashmir Valley in 1989. The radical Islamists targeted Pandits - a minuscule community in Muslim dominated society, creating enormous fear, panic and grave sense of insecurity. In the face of ruthless atrocities inflicted on them, the Pandits’ sole concern was ensuring their own physical safety and their resolve not to convert to Islam.

Over 350,000 Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee en masse leaving their home and hearth. This was the single largest forced displacement of people of a particular ethnicity after partition of India.

Pandits’ travails did not end with the exodus. The obstructive and intimidating attitude of the State administration towards the Pandit refugees, made their post-exodus existence even more miserable. The Government at the Centre too remained indifferent to their plight.

This book traces the Pandits’ economic and political marginalization in the State over the past six decades and covers in detail the events that led to their eventual exodus.

In the light of ethnic cleansing of Pandits from the Valley, the book also examines some critical issues so crucial to India’s survival as a multi-cultural, liberal and secular democracy

About the Author

Col. Tej Kumar Tikoo (Retd), PhD, was born at Srinagar (Kashmir) on April 15, 1950. After completing his school and college education at Srinagar, he joined the Indian Army, being commissioned into 1st Battalion of the newly raised Naga Regiment on August 22, 1971. Soon thereafter, he found himself fighting the 1971 Indo-Pak war in the eastern sector, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. As an infantryman, Col. Tikoo spent a major portion of his thirty-four years of service in the army on the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir or fighting insurgency operations. Col. Tikoo is a graduate of the prestigious Defense Services Staff College and has been an instructor in the Senior Command wing of the Army War College at Mhow. He retired in 2004 and has an M.Sc. in defense studies from Madras University, and a PhD in defense studies.

Incredible Portable Reader

There are an amazing number of pieces that are included in "The Portable Renaissance Reader." These works include letters from Boccaccio and Pope Pius II to Petrarch's poetry. Other writings, such as, "Self-Protrait of a Universal Man" by Leon Battista Alberti provides a thoughtful look into the notion of what defines a "Renaissance Man." Within its impressive volume, however, with the exception of St. Teresa of Avila, there lacks women writers of the period; yet the book not only covers a broad amount of material by Renaissance men, but there is also a biographical list of authors and a chronological table that is an asset for researchers who would like to go into further depth on the subject. Perhaps, an accurate summarization of this book is that it provides much information into what is still called "portable."

GREAT COLLECTION

This book was ordered for my son for a college class he was in last year, but I have since taken it and added it to my collection and I've enjoyed picking it up now and then and reading selections. It's not something you need to read all at once, but you could place in your kitchen for when you are waiting for water to boil and you need something to occupy yourself...or when you are waiting for a phone call, and you have time to kill...all those moments when a long book won't do, but a selection from this textbook will satisfy.

Interesting Anthology

This book covers the landscape from about 1400 to 1600, focusing on the following major groups of writings:

*Man
*Nature
*God

With excepts from Galileo, Kepler, Erasmus, Pius II, Teresa of Avila, Luther, Di Vinci and many other lesser known writers of the age The writings provide a glimpse (and little more) into the politics and philosophies of the times. Few of the writings, with the exception of some of the poetry, is complete, or even complete enough to dig in to in any depth. For instance, the excerpt from Cervantes Don Quixote is only 4 pages or so long.

Having noted that limitation, the anthology is interesting enough, and will point the reader to other authors and works to dig deeper. The account of the election of Pius II alone is worth picking up a used copy of this book. An interesting anthology that provides a flavor of the age to the reader.

Consequently, the desire to understand the solutions of these equations has always had a prominent place in the efforts of mathematicians; it has inspired such diverse fields as complex function theory, functional analysis, and algebraic topology. Unfortunately, in the standard graduate curriculum, the subject of partial differential equations is seldom taught with the same thoroughness as algebra or integration theory. The present book is aimed at rectifying this situation. It is based on a four-semester course taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The goal of this course was to provide the background necessary to initiate work on a PhD thesis in partial differential equations. The level of the book is aimed at beginning graduate students. Prerequisites include a truly advanced calculus course and basic complex variables, but no knowledge is required of Lebesgue integration theory or functional analysis.

An extremely well written introduction to PDEs

An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations by Renardy and Rogers is a very well written introduction to the huge and important area of PDEs. It covers both the classical and modern PDE theory on, compared with other expositions, a relatively low number of pages. Nevertheless, Renardy and Rogers succeed in introducing the most important concepts and explaining their interrelations, so that alltogether, the book provides the reader with the background necessary for diving safely into the more advanced literature on the subject.
It was a pleasure for me to read the book, and after nearly four years of work in PDEs, it is still my reference of choice. I would highly recommend it for students of mathematics and for mathematically inclined engineering students.

A very good book to learn about partial differential eqn's.

I found what I was looking for in this book to know enough about this huge theory of Partial Differential Equations. Contents of each chapter is clearly developed and no essential point is missed. If you are someone who seriously wants to learn more and apply PDE theory in your research, this book is worth picking. Although the title alludes to an introductory book bearing a simple approach, this book is far more than an introduction, and I would say some little background in PDE's would help.

About the Author

Linje Manyozo is a Lecturer and Director of the MSc Programme in Media, Communications and Development in the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science. He has taught development communication in South Africa and Malawi, where in 2005, he successfully proposed and introduced Africa s first ever undergraduate degree programme in development communication at the University of Malawi. He continues to guest-lecture in Europe, as he strongly believes that development communication is even more relevant to the global north. Linje s teaching and research are informed by his upbringing in postcolonial Malawi as well as his work as a development journalist, creating educational communications with marginalized communities. His past and current research examines questions of subaltern representation, voice and authority in development policy formulation and implementation.
