It gives a concise review of ultrasound examination technique for pediatric patients and it is hoped to be of value to sonographers of all levels of experience. The content of the handbook has been drawn both from clinical experience in a pediatric ultrasound department and a comprehensive literature review. The information is presented in point form under appropriate headings. Each type of ultrasound examination creates a new chapter and gives patient preparation for various age groups, contraindications, equipment and organs examined for that particular procedure. Each chapter will provide scanning technique and for specific pathology examinations e.g. pyloric stenosis, descriptions of the ultrasonic features of that pathology. Examples of normal measurements and the correct level for taking these measurements are also included. Each chapter contains a series of ultrasound images and demonstrates specific anatomy, or scan planes through a particular organ. Accompanying every ultrasound image is a corresponding line drawing which labels anatomy and identifies relevant pathology or ultrasound specific landmarks. These drawings have been included to help the reader gain a better understanding of the ultrasound image they are viewing and enable a more informed interpretation of the dynamic examination when viewed in real time. For the experienced sonographer in a non-pediatric department, the book aims to provide quick reference to information not often used e.g. the appropriate patient preparation for a specific age group, or a reminder of measurement criteria for diagnosing pathology. For the remote or solo practitioner, the aim is to provide backup, giving examples of images of examination specific pathologies, and the measurements or criteria for diagnosing the pathology. The student will find the basics have been described, from which probe to use, to the overall scanning technique.

Infomercial. Disapointed. Save your money.

This book disappointed me in many ways.

I will list a few.

I have been reading the author's market comments for years and he makes sense most of the time. He had the potential to really share something useful. He did not.

The book:

The books starts with a bit of his personal history, then with some common investment wisdom you can find for free anywhere, stuff like " you don't have to be always invested, some of the best traders are in the market no more than 20% or 30% of the year."
Nothing wrong with those reminders so far, other than there is nothing new there.

Where I started to have a serious whiff of infomercial was when the author was chanting the virtues of cycles,etc. then after one of the chapters, I realized that pretty much none of what he had talked about so far relied on commonly found indicators... That's when I felt the pinch of a leg trap and I knew what was coming ahead: the only system who had all that good stuff was :

1- Bill O'Neil's IBD system
2- the author's system
3- other Financial Gurus system.

If you answered 2, you are one heck of a smart wizard. Congrats!
That's it, the second half of the book is basically funneling the readers towards his proprietary system Algo Trades.

I read the second part halfheartedly, expecting pretty much all the infos to be related to some services the author had to sell. I was not disappointed in that regard.

So here are my recommendations:

1- If you are planning to use Algo Trades or his other services, skip the book and go to his website. The FAQ and videos are pretty good, it covers most of what the book covers.

2- Want to learn to trade on your own? Try "How to Make Money in Stocks : Getting Started" from Galgani so you can learn to use O'Neil's service, if you don't want to use O'Neil's paid services, you will still get some decent infos in that book and it will be a good intro for the ticker "How to Make Money in Stocks" from O'Neil himself.

If you want a very solid book for beginners to pros, try the Superstocks book by Jesse Stine. It contains some of the O'Neils principles... but just a few. The authors has his own recipe and he is not afraid to share it.

On the positive side...

I need to disclose that despite the fact that I got nothing out of the book, I still respect the author. I think he is a hard-working, honest guy with a strong entrepreneurial side. Though I am not subscribing to any of his services at this point, I did a long time ago and I might in the future.

My point is that I have no real concerns with his integrity, it is just that I hate buying infomercial books. I know this guy has lots of tricks and in exchange of my dough... I thought he would share way more. I was just out of Jesse Stine's book which is pretty much packed with big charts and tricks, therefore my expectations where high.

AlgoTrades system doesn't work

I'm reluctantly writing a negative review about this book because I really wanted to like the AlgoTrades system that Chris basically advertises in his book. I read the book, signed up for his AlgoTrades newsletter service and quickly realized that almost everything he highlights in the book is common sense stuff and the "hands-free" automated trading system he develop loses more money than it makes. You will lose money using his system and you will learn nothing new from the content of this book.

I've studied technical analysis for years, so Chris's book was a reminder to have a plan, know myself, and stay
focused. The stock market is a complex arena, and Chris keeps trading simple. The book is easy to read, and I
recommend it for beginners, and for those more experienced traders, like myself.

Helpful Within the Genre

Unfortunately, the 8th and 9th editions are out of date, having been published in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Now this book is in its 10th edition, published in August 2009.

I just can't believe you can get these older edition used for a few dollars before shipping. When a new textbook comes out in this subject, it is never cheap. The 10th edition is currently $146.67 and worth it if you're getting into AIS (accounting information systems). Still, the former editions can serve in places as a reference to this day.

For convenience, here's a link to the latest edition: Accounting Information Systems (10th Edition). I wrote a review for the edition in this link, the 10th edition.

Since I am in the field, although my area in not purely AIS since I'm a practitioner and not a designer of accounting systems, I can say things are good still. What I mean by that is that so far in this economic downturn, accounting information systems work has not been on the decline to my observation and from talking with others in it.

Of course, the subject is very dry. And if there is one warning that I may give it is about caring for your back. I had to reach a level in many subject areas as does everyone in AIS. Along the way I got advanced degrees and many certifications. But I ended up with serious back pain, surely the result of racking up plenty of sitting time in totally non-ergonomic chairs. It's not just something to think about but you need to manage it early through exercises to strengthen the core muscles that hold up your spine, stretching throughout the day, and using ergonomic chairs and principles.

One more thing. Not all AIS books are equal even though they're probably all with their special strong points.

A Very Good Investment

As a CPA and CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), I am forever trying to keep up with topics covered in the grand subject known as Accounting Information Systems. Since I practice and manage the financial accounting function, I do well by keeping current with a few books including those of Bodnar and Hopwood.

Accounting Information Systems, 10th edition, continues the tradition of strong transaction processing and cycle processes chapters. In fact, the 10th edition shows meaningful updates in all the chapters and continues to improve upon conciseness. I recall the 8th edition, published in 2000, that was 684 pages and had larger dimensions. Thankfully the authors made a major move toward conciseness starting with their 9th edition and have continued. The only thing I miss about pre-9th editions is the hardcover.

New strengths in the 10th edition include excellent chapters on information security and information control and audit. Also, the systems analysis and design (SAD) area is much improved and makes for easier reading.

This book is an investment as there is value in staying current in an area that remains dynamic in this economy. While the subject is dry, no question about that, the authors have done what they can to make each topic more accessible. That's why I recommend this book over others in the category.

With technology, we are constantly revamping our ideals and our techniques. This book has the reader left in the dark ages. Sadly, there are not many books on this specialized topic, so schools are still forced to use it. In my experience, this book is excellent when discussing internal controls and does a nice job of giving the reader a brief overview of how an accounting system works. Great for newbies into the field, but very dull for someone like me who has been worked with several different systems over the past ten years. That brings me to another point, the book is very dry. Don't look for humor or interesting facts here. Just plain information.

If you are a teacher considering this book, I encourage you to either supplement or update the information provided in the text or to find another book.

An essential book for all vegans

This book was mainly written for people who follow a vegan diet or are already considering it. It's a complete overview of vegan nutrition in all stages of life. While there is a short introduction on "why being vegan"... the authors quickly jump to the juicy part and cover the nutritional information all vegans need to know.

The authors have done their research! This is not a classic vegan book repeating the same old arguments. It provides clear nutritional guidance to help vegans stay healthy and design the most adequate diet possible. It's up to date science!

You'll discover interesting pieces of information in this book. For example:

- Vegans can benefit from getting adequate amounts of protein. While it's true that almost nobody suffers from true protein deficiencies in the West, not getting adequate protein can result in muscle mass loss and poor bone health.
- Vegans should take a B12 supplement, even if they just started the diet. The old idea of "wait three years to do it because your body has reserves" is not the wisest.
- Why some vegans crash and fail to thrive, reverting back to animal foods, because they make their diet too restrictive and idealistic
- Getting the RDA for calcium is important for vegans. You'll discover which greens have a negative calcium balance and how to make sure you get enough calcium on a vegan diet, even without supplements
- Other nutrients to watch out about on a vegan diet (or any diet), such as vitamin D, iodine, zinc, etc.
- Ideas for making a vegan diet fun and easy to follow.
- Why it makes sense to take a vegan DHA supplement
- How to adapt a vegan diet to meet the needs of growing children, pregnant women, older people, etc.

This book does not contain a recipe section, but it does contain a lot of meal ideas.

It's filled with tables and useful references, so I would suggest buying the print version, as some of the tables are not as convenient to look at on the Kindle version.

You can tell that the book has been written by professional nutritionists. It's a very good reference, and a great starting point for any vegan.

An excellent, thorough and honest look at vegan nutrition.

I have both been a vegan and a grateful fan of the work of Ginny Messina and Jack Norris for many years. Both of them are truly unique among advocates of plant based diets simply because they refrain from hyperbole and don't promise that eating buckets of kale will lead to a life void of the inevitable: old age, sickness and death. That's not to say that veganism has not been a boon to my personal health: it has. But, like everyone else, I will die some day, and vegan eating doesn't change that.

Ginny and Jack keep the arguments about veganism all about the animals, even though they are both dieticians and devoted to human health and nutrition. But they are interested in healthy, happy vegans, too. They have written, at their own time and expense, for many years about the benefits and pitfalls of plant-based eating. They have made recommendations, and changed their positions many times as the science continues to unfold about human nutrition (which should be considered new and emerging). They have done so with kindness, compassion and without a hint of arrogance.

Vegan for Life, a brilliant double-entendre, is an exceptional book. If it's not the very first, it has to be among the very few that paints a reasonably complex picture of vegan eating that goes over every facet--- the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. They don't claim that everyone must eat ultra low-fat (quite the opposite); they don't push raw diets (or even recommend them, actually). I actually suspect that they will receive a fair amount of criticism for this book because of its refusal to oversimplify and paint with a broad brush; because they don't promise miracles, and because they admit that there's much we simply don't know about nutrition. But that's precisely what I find refreshing about their work, and this book in particular. Their honesty is precisely why I trust them.

I believe that all humans can become vegan. That's also my wish. However, I believe that it's not a one-size-fits-all way of eating, and we have yet to figure out how every person can become vegan, and stay vegan, successfully --- enjoying abundant health. Vegan for Life gives lots of useful information for people wanting to maintain good health, and for people who feel like they're struggling to get what they need. Vegan for Life shows that it's not impossible for everyone eat, and stay, vegan.

In my opinion, this book renders all other books on vegan nutrition written to date useless (not because other authors necessarily wrote bad books, but because this book incorporates the latest and greatest). And alas, Vegan for Life is written for the long time and brand new vegan alike; all of us are wise to pay attention because --- as the title suggests --- animal advocates want people to become vegan for life. Ginny and Jack are just the people to show us all how.

Essential Reading for Anyone Interested in a Complete, Nutritionally Sound Diet

After years of reading the authors' excellent blogs, I am very happy to have their outstanding book. Having been vegan for a number of years, I am always interested in keeping on top of the literature so that I do not develop any nutrition-related health issues. This book is based upon current, sound research and is presented in an easily read, enjoyable format. The authors are nationally (and perhaps internationally) respected professionals in their field-and both are Registered Dietitians. As a licensed professional myself, I am always concerned about the credentials of those who advise others on diet and health matters. This book is written by qualified, credentialed professionals.
That being said, I have to add that this is not a boring tome on nutrition or ethics--it is an easily read, fun yet informative book. Filled with easy to follow advice and suggestions.
They cover everything from how to eat, what to eat, and why one would eat vegan (e.g., ethical issues, health issues). Detailed discussions of supplements and menu suggestions are included. This is essential reading for anyone considering a transition to a vegan diet as well as those who have been vegan for some time.
I highly recommend Vegan for Life and thank and applaud the authors on this great book. It is my new "Bible" and go-to book for eating healthy and well. I ordered the hard copy for my patient waiting room and ordered the digital for my Ipad. I look forward to their future books!
