Cornell Instructor's Opinion
By Odd Waters
Despite its age and somewhat outdated nomenclatures, this book is still the best comprehensive introductory hydrology book in existence. There are better quantitative hydrology texts (e.g., Dingman), better engineering texts (e.g., Chow and prodigies), more cogent overviews of hydrology (e.g., Hornberger et al.), and more appropriate "handbooks" (e.g., Chow or Maidment). But, Dunne and Leopold is the only text I know of that provides a good balance among applied context, quantitative tools, and conceptual descriptions of basic and integrated processes while retaining its comprehensive character without copious mistakes and errors. I sincerely hope that a new, similarly good text emerges soon.

A good handbook for any planner

Dunne & Leopold's "Water In Environmental Planning" is a great tool of reference for the planner of any type. It addresses key issues in the role of water during the planning process and also includes important formulas for solving water problems. This is a great text for water resource consultants and managers. It is well organized and comprehensive. It bridges the diciplines of hydrology, forest hydrology and resource management.

About the Author
Fidel Castro (1926-) led a guerrilla movement in Cuba that overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959. Despite innumerable assassination attempts, the Cuban president was the nemesis of 10 US administrations. He retired due to ill-health in August 2006, but has continued to make characteristically forthright comments on world events and US-Cuba relations. Obama is the eleventh US president to confront Fidel Castro.

An appeal to our humanity
By Malvin
"Obama and the Empire" is an excellent collection of short "reflections" written from May 2008 through June 2010 by the legendary Fidel Castro, who today remains one of the most authentic living critics of the U.S. capitalist state. Filled with numerous insights gained over a lifetime spent successfully resisting empire, Mr. Castro poses the kinds of questions that only someone who has no fear could ask. Indeed, Mr. Castro's ability to forcefully speak truth to power makes him an invaluable if unlikely ally to countless Americans who might be pondering their country's future.

Mr. Castro astutely perceives that there are two Obamas: a person who embodies the hopes and aspirations of the American people; and a chief executive whose ambitions are bound to serve the narrow interests of capital. On the one hand, Mr. Castro generally lauds Obama for his intellect, work ethic and mastery of issues such as global warming. On the other hand, Mr. Castro laments that Obama has been unwilling to act decisively on issues that might prove beneficial to humanity while working frantically to prop up a fatally flawed and unsustainable economic system. Not that any of this comes as a surprise to Mr. Castro; as a witness to the eleventh president to hold office since the Cuban Revolution, Mr. Castro knows full well that Obama's power is constrained by the demands of the economic system over which he presides.

Mr. Castro knows a thing or two about armed struggle, and it is perhaps on this topic that his criticism carries the most weight. Obama is faulted for escalating the unwinnable war in Afghanistan; colonizing the nation of Colombia with military bases; and of course, refusing to lift the embargo on Cuba at a time when even some Republican senators have indicated a willingness to change. However, Mr. Castro is most impressive when he seamlessly ties U.S. foreign policy to the expansionist needs of America's economy. Highlighting Obama's continued funding of the military/industrial complex, Mr. Castro questions why the president finds nothing wrong with allowing robotic weapons to do the dirty work of projecting American power into distant lands.

On that point, Mr. Castro provides a useful perspective from the world's poorer nations. Most Americans rarely consider how our insatiable thirst for human and physical resources might impose higher labor, food and fuel costs on others; nor do we often acknowledge that our consumption habits might be squandering an opportunity to use the earth's resources more wisely and equitably with the goal of lifting up others from poverty. With a billion hungry people in a world that is already feeling the effects of global warming and with little power to challenge the American war machine, Mr. Castro's appeal to our humanity could not be more timely.

I highly recommend this slender (134 pages) but important book to everyone.

Recently Expanded Edition: At eighty-six he remains leading voice for sanity in our hemisphere; this review of new 2012 edition
By Love Thy Enemy
This previously published collection of essays has recently been expanded and updated to include Fidel's thoughts around the assassination attempt of Rep. Gifford in Arizona, the US 2011 State of the Union Address, etc. This volume closes considering the illegal killing of Bin Laden and its effects on our history, our world, the local society and his family, who were present.

He interrupts this global consideration of this illegal and immoral assassination by making the global local, in recalling correctly: "Still engraved in the minds of hundreds of millions of people are also the horrible images of human beings who, for months and even for years, have been submitted to unbearable and excruciating torture in Guantanamo, an illegally occupied territory in Cuba. They were kidnapped and transferred to secret prisons with the hypocritical connivance of supposedly civilized countries (p. 154)."

For more on the situation of immorality, illegality and injustice still on-going on Guantanamo Bay, please study carefully the excellent and tragic chronicle For God And Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire.

This book thus closes considering validly and rationally and substantially the assassination of Ossama Bin Laden by the US government. The penultimate chapter explores the US invasion of Libya, with the driving motive being as everywhere, oil.

We must read this important chapter with our most serious consideration (and like the people of Nineveh hearing the message of Jonah: our deepest sincere repentance), as it begins globally and then specifically to explain why we invade nations with whom we are not at war. Within this informative and clarifying chapter we find this sentence: "The squandering of oil and gas is associated with one of the greatest tragedies, which is far from being resolved, which is suffered by humankind, climate change (p. 147)." With that broad perspective, this essay, drafted February 21, 2011, concludes, after retracing the heroic history of the Libyan revolution, with this warning: "An honest person will always be against any injustice being committed against any people in the world. And, at this moment, the worst thing would be to remain silent in the face of the crime that NATO is getting ready to commit against the Libyan people. The leadership of that war-mongering organization will attack Libya. We must condemn it (p. 149)!" Well, it did, and we all fail to, until now . . .

In the midst of an analysis of our president's address to a grieving Arizona mourning those six killed and congress-lady gravely wounded along with fourteen others on January 8, 2011, President Fidel again takes the global perspective, recounting the facts of the failing US economy, of crop failures worldwide due to climate change, and the dangers of nuclear warfare in this present political instability. Please study these chapters carefully, rationally, and follow up with further study, until at long last even you can act.

There is so much of gold within this volume that I wish to share with you, chapter by chapter, brilliant, correct analysis of where we are and why, but I urge you please to read this book, especially now, in our coming insanity of an election year in which we are buried and baffled by lies rather than these truths, bravely and clearly spoken.

This book carefully weighs events in the Obama administration over the past three years, from May of 2008 through May of this year, 2011 in thirty three insightful essays by President Fidel Castro, and must be read by every American. Forget who wrote them; read them, and find the assumptions we have cherished and are sold melting under the broader light of reason. Great antidote to our national media.

Review
"Stern and Byrne have that go for the throat intensity that makes so many modern comic books seem flat and dull by comparison. Byrne's artwork leaps off of the page. The fluidity is reminiscent of Byrne's unparalleled run on The Uncanny X-Men, where there is never a dull moment or chance to catch your breath. If space aliens land on Earth and ask me 'what is a superhero comic book?', I will hand them this book." -- Kris Shaw, junkfoodforthought-krisshaw.blogspot.com

"Captain America was the first patriotic superhero to hit big with the public, and over the years a vast number of talented artists and writers have crafted his adventures. I'll leave you to compile your own top ten, but I'll wager that this all too brief run by Roger Stern, John Byrne and Joe Rubenstein will provide at least one of them.  This volume ... seamlessly blends epic adventure with spectacular superhero art for a fan's delight that is also readily accessible to the newcomer or casual reader." -- Win Wiacek, comicsreview.co.uk

"I found a copy of Roger Stern and John Byrne's book and I must say that I read it with stars in my eyes. I instantly fell in love with this book. Having been so used to the dark spy-like feel that Brubaker's Cap is all about, it was a nice change of pace to look back at a much more hopeful and happier Steve Rogers. It's a fun read that really shows how much comics have changed over the decades. Add to that the fantastic art from John Byrne and you have one of the legendary runs of Cap that still holds up even today." -- Eric Godfrey, goodreads.com

"In just nine brief issues, Stern and Byrne did so much.  They gave Captain America a new, young girlfriend with an effervescent personality and true character--Bernie Rosenthal. There are maybe only a handful of superhero girlfriends who have the depth and range of Bernie ... and this was in a book where a supporting cast had never, ever really mattered. They revived The Invaders, marrying Cap's past with his present. They told what is still considered by most to be the definitive "origin" retelling. And Cap (almost) ran for President!" -- Ethan Kalett

"Batroc the Leaper, Mister Hyde, and Baron Blood were all temporarily elevated to A-list status after Stern and Byrne were finished with them ... [but] the real highlight was Captain America #250, where Cap briefly contemplated a Presidential run. In an era where big business was running unregulated and actors were masquerading as politicians, this issue served as succinct commentary for the state of the country. It's the perfect blend of intelligence and fantasy." -- Jason Serafino

From the Author
"Captain America is both an idealist and a patriot ... a living symbol of the American Dream. He grew up in a era of economic upheaval and government corruption, in a time when political and religious demagogues used the airwaves to increase their personal power and wealth. When Cap came out of suspended animation and rejoined the world, things hadn't really changed that much. There were more people, and the demagogues were using television in addition to radio, but Cap had seen it all before. And despite the frustration of seeing how little people had changed, he didn't give in to cynicism. That toughness of character was -- is -- his greatest strength." -- Roger Stern

From the Inside Flap
Roger Stern is a veteran comic-book writer and former editor best known best known for his role in one of comics' most shocking events: the 1992 "Death of Superman" saga, which killed off the iconic character for a short time. His Marvel works include well-regarded runs on Dr. Strange and Amazing Spider-Man; in the latter title, he introduced the hell-raising Hobgoblin, the secret of whose identity spanned decades. In addition to a long tenure as Avengers writer, Stern helped launch West Coast Avengers; he has also written or co-written such related projects as Avengers #1 ½, Avengers Forever, Avengers Infinity, Avengers Two: Wonder Man and Beast and X-Men vs. Avengers.

John Byrne has worked continuously in the comic-book industry as both writer and artist since he debut in 1975. After initially collaborating with write Chris Claremont on Iron Fist, Byrne and Claremont moved on to X-Men for a run that is still regarded as one of the title's finest. Byrne followed his X-successes with an equally famed stint on Fantastic Four, earning comparisons to the original Lee/Kirby issues for his imaginative plotlines and dynamic artwork; he also spun Alpha Flight into its own title, beginning a sibling franchise to the X-Men. In 1986, he was selected to revamp DC's flagship hero, Superman, re-imagining the Man of Steel in a historic project heralded by a Time magazine cover. In the 21st century, Byrne continued his DC work with the launches of Blood of the Demon and Doom Patrol, along with a return to Superman in Action Comics.

Iconic Cap!
By Bucky
Stern+Byrne= Absolute Cap awesomeness. Together, these two creators- two of the best in the business- crafted an iconic Captain America run, that exemplified so many things that make Cap not only the greatest hero in the Marvel Universe, but in all of comicdom. A look through Roger Stern & John Byrne's huge back catalogue of comics work will tell you from the word go that you're going to get fantastic, character-driven storytelling and art. John Byrne's art- from X-Men to Avengers to Cap & the FF, shows his skill as both a defining artist and writer in the comic industry, and the same can be said for Roger Stern, whose credits include great runs on the Amazing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange(which I greatly enjoyed!). However, when these two teamed up on Cap, you got absolute magic, and you saw what a dynamic duo these guys were. They focused not only on what makes Cap a great hero- his courage, his humility, and his selflessness- but also focused on the man behind the shield and the star-spangled garb, underneath the symbol of liberty he was as Captain America- Steve Rogers. They gave a seldom-seen look at the life of Steve Rogers outside of his role as the Sentinel of Liberty, showing an everyman quality to him as he tries to make ends meet working as a freelance artist, and his friendships with normal people at his Brooklyn Heights apartment building. They deal with his aspect as a man out of time, but in a creative way- through the beginnings of his May-December romance with Bernie Rosenthal, perhaps the most "normal" of Cap's love interests, who is very much a product of the modern world, while Steve, despite his youthful appearance, is a member of the greatest generation. This is an aspect and look at the man behind the stars and stripes that I truly enjoy. However, this book is more than just great character moments, there's plenty of action for everyone, as through this run Cap battles against robot duplicates, the rampaging Dragon Man, the surprising team up of the diabolical Mr. Hyde and Batroc the Leaper, and Cap travelling to the UK to deal with the return of the Invaders' vampiric foe, Baron Blood. One of the highlights of the book is the final story, which is a retelling of Cap's origin which remains a definitive telling of how Steve Rogers became Captain America, a retelling that is faithful to the original with new details to make it contemporary as well. John Byrne even did his own pencil art and inking like they did in the 40s to add to the authenticity of the story, as well as the choice of President Roosevelt's narration. Cap's origins have been retold many times, but this remains my personal favorite. I also greatly enjoyed the aforementioned Baron Blood story, which had Cap revisiting the Falsworth family, Lord Falsworth & his daughter Jackie(formerly Union Jack & Spitfire of the Invaders), to face Baron Blood, with a bit of mystery that culminates in an awesome confrontation between Cap & Baron Blood(and what's cooler than Cap vs. a vampire Nazi?), with a conclusion that can't be missed, that leads to the introduction of a new Union Jack that has become a fan favorite character over the years. Stern and Byrne just hit on all cylinders with these stories, with excellent scripts and Byrne providing iconic images of Cap in action. His Cap even has a presence when he's just standing in a panel, so you can just imagine what happens when the action goes down, whether it's Cap dealing with something as simple as street-thugs or throwing down with superhuman foes like Mr. Hyde and Baron Blood. These two had just such a great understanding of Cap, producing an iconic run that continues to inspire Cap creators to this day. It's a shame their run wasn't longer; they had intended to do a story involving the Red Skull, another involving the return of Kirby creations Arnim Zola and the Swine, and rumors even had it they had plans for Bucky. One can only imagine what could have happened had circumstances been different and they were allowed to continue. Regardless, we will still have these awesome stories from the Stern & Byrne team, that stand the test of time and get better with each read. Highly recommended for any Cap fan, and for people just getting interested in comicdom's real American hero.

A must have collection for Cap readers!
By C. Yoshihara
If you like stories of Cap, then this is a great book for you. Roger Stern is a very good writer and this was John Byrne at the highlight of his career - right around his groundbreaking run on Uncanny X-Men. His shading and line work are terrific (compared to now where I just don't feel he is as good as he used to be). Good stories and good art for a good price. A must have for a Cap fan who doesn't already have these books in his / her collection!

Thank goodness for reprints.
By Nancy Nagler
At first I was a little disappointed that it was all reprints then I remembered that I had sold ALL of my older comics. It was a relief to get some of them back, hardbound and on heavier paper. And I love John Byrne's art.

Transformed

This review is from: Idol Lies: Facing the Truth About Our Deepest Desires (Hardcover)
This ten week study will rock your world in all the right ways. The author tells powerful stories of real women seeking transformation. And instead of trying harder to overcome in our own strength, and ultimately failing--again-this book illuminates to the reader the real obstacles-idols-which will always prevent the change we long for. Seeing and naming our own idosl is the starting point for the transformation we have sought for years. Transformation is impossible until you can 'see' that you, too, are an idolator.

Dee's questions are penetrating and there is no hiding. You can be honest or you can be silent but you cannot be a disingenuous..

If you long for intimacy with the Lord, this study could open soul pathways to His heart. If you ache for freedom, this study could unfetter you from the oughts and shoulds that bind. If you crave joy, this study could restore the joy of your salvation afresh. But only if your start, 'shouw up', and persevere to the end.

I am giving this to all my friends for gifts this year!

This will take you closer in and higher up with Him!
By R.D.
If you want to have deeper intimacy with God but you feel as if you have lost your first love and the fire is gone, or there is a cloud or a wall between you and God, this is the book for you! This is the most encouraging book I have ever read, and has changed my life. Dee is transparent as she admits her idolatry and how God, our great redeemer, was a salve to her pain as she let go of her idols and trusted Him to satisfy her soul. Dee's book will take you closer in and higher up with God especially if you do the Bible Study in the back. I never felt preached at or experienced any guilt reading this book and doing the study. It was quite the opposite! I felt deeply encouraged yet gently convicted, and I felt hope as God began chipping away at my stone. I finally saw the huge boulder in the way of intimacy with God and the hope Dee gives in this book is that He will cut it away and will do the heart surgery we need to draw us closer to Him. My intimacy with God is deeper now than it ever has been.

Heart Transforming Must Read
By JR
I have read many Christian books for women and not one has been as life changing as Idol Lies. One thing that sets Dee's book apart from the others is her honest humility in sharing her own struggles. From page one, you are drawn in to her personal journey. She introduces women with struggles we can all relate to. But most importantly, with empathy and grounded biblical insight, she guides readers to the Truth that sets us free. Idol Lies aids the reader in identifying the hidden idols that we have become so comfortable with we don't even recognize as idols. She helps us see how these idols are not the "friends" to our soul we think they are, but are hindrances to the life we were created for. Dee points readers to the path of freedom and living life for our One True Love. This book shook up my heart and challenged my thinking, and ultimately filled me with hope and a deeper love for Christ.

Too Heavy a Load: Black Women in Defense of Themselves, 1894-1994, by Deborah Gray White

"Meticulously researched. . . . Too Heavy a Load reads like a wonderful historical novel."--Akilah Monifa, Emerge

Too Heavy a Load celebrates this century's rich history of black women defending themselves, from Ida B. Wells to Anita Hill. Although most prominently a history of the century-long struggle against racism and male chauvinism, Deborah Gray White also movingly illuminates black women's painful struggle to hold their racial and gender identities intact while feeling the inexorable pull of the agendas of white women and black men. Finally, it tells the larger and lamentable story of how Americans began this century measuring racial progress by the status of black women but gradually came to focus on the status of black men-the masculinization of America's racial consciousness. Writing with the same magisterial eye for historical detail as in her best-selling Ar'n't I a Woman, Deborah Gray White has given us a moving and definitive history of struggle and freedom. "Splendid . . . a broad and sweeping history that becomes an intensely personal experience for the reader. . . . An inspiring showcase of scholarship and sistership." - Nell Irvin Painter, Raleigh News & Observer Illustrated

Amazon.com Review
In the last decade of the 1800s, lynching, mob violence, and segregation were well-entrenched responses to the American "race problem." Rising up in spirited defense, black women launched several regional organizations designed to defend and improve the rights of their race and their place within it. Yet the creed of betterment espoused by many black club women overlay sometimes-bitter commentary on black men for their failures as supporters and protectors. It also castigated lower-class "sisters" whose oft-caricatured mores cast a shadow on their own. And it had a rocky relationship with the broader American feminist movement: "Since they could not control white men, the source of most of their woes," historian Deborah Gray White says, "and since they believed that a race could rise no higher than its women, they had to begin that elevation with the women themselves." Too Heavy a Load swings on through the maelstrom of the civil rights movement, welfare advocacy, black nationalism, and feminism to more recent rifts, such as the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings. While doing so, it pieces together the engaging story of the backstage struggles in such early firebrand organizations as the National Association of Colored Women and the National Council of Negro Women. By including the clashes that strong personalities and different aims beget, White brings dimension to her story and provides strong illustration for her contention that "gender and race sameness [are] no guarantee of a beloved sisterhood." --Francesca Coltrera

Informative read.
By zoe
I really appreciated the interest Deborah White has taken in this time period and in these people. The book is intended for those that are truly interested in the development of the role NACW in a hundred year span. The book could be used more specifically for those studying the liberation of women or African Americans in this time period. White is a teacher by profession and that comes though in the book. It was written more to educate, not to entertain.

If you want to write in the blogosphere, you must buy this book!
By Lisa Boyd
The Elements of Blogging is so incredibly helpful. I am a TV writer living in Los Angeles, and because I work seasonally, I wanted to learn how to create a blog to improve my writing skills, so I don't twiddle my thumbs in the off-season. The Elements of Blogging gave me a ton of ideas and a boost of confidence as well. ("The odds are you know more about something than others--and probably more about several somethings.") Especially instructive was this advice: "You don't have to post every day, but you should write every day, even if only a few lines." This particular advice is made easier by the book with its fun and easy-to-grasp exercises at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated the guidance on ethics, podcasts, gold coins, and "link love". All that plus the author's piece on media coverage of a foul-mouthed David Ortiz made my day. Bravo.

Great book to educate people on blogging!
By hollybloom24
Social media is a huge part of my job, and we have been thinking of starting a blog. I bought the book because of that and also because one of the authors was my former journalism professor and one of the best teachers I have ever had, so I knew I'd learn a great deal. This book gives solid guidelines for starting and maintaining different types of blogs (travel, advice, politics, everyday, etc.) and building your brand. The book covers humor, ethics, blog design, dealing with spammers... It would be a great textbook for journalism or communication classes, and it's a really great reference for those of us who started out getting our news from print media and now have transitioned to online media! It would also be a great book for the "home blogger," small businesses, and anyone else thinking about blogging.

The next best thing to having Jerry Lanson as a teacher!
By Kim E. Pearson
If you have not had the good fortune, as I did, to have Jerry Lanson teach you how to write and report the news, this book is the next best thing. The Elements of Blogging pulls off the neat trick of being erudite but accessible, practical but theoretically sophisticated, and useful to novices and beginners alike. It draws useful distinctions between news and opinion blogging and takes beginning bloggers through each step of the process of defining, designing and developing a blog. It is particularly strong when it comes to nuts-and-bolts reporting, interviewing and writing skills. That's not surprising, given the authors' deep resumes as journalists, journalism educators and writing coaches. I have already used portions of the text in a college-level first seminar class, and I plan to use it as a required text in an upper-level course on political reporting.class. No matter how the news business changes, the skills imparted in this book will continue to be essential. I heartily recommend it to anyone aspiring to be a professional communicator.

Landscape: Pattern, Perception and Process, by Simon Bell

Landscapes develop and evolve through an interacting series of processes – climatic, geological, ecological and cultural – over varying periods of time. These processes shape the structure and character of the landscapes which we experience. Over time, distinctive patterns emerge – ranging in scale from the distribution of small plants to the sculptured sides of a huge canyon. Our perception of these patterns goes beyond just their visual appreciation – beautiful though they may be – into a richer understanding of how we experience our environment.

By understanding this complex pattern–process interaction we can obtain a deeper awareness of landscape and our place in it – as inhabitants and as shapers. The book explores the nature of patterns and ways of classifying them before studying the nature of perception (primarily visual but including other senses), then proceeds to relate this perception to aesthetics and from there to the design process. From this point the main driving processes in landscape are introduced alongside the resulting patterns, these being climatic, landform, ecosystem and cultural aspects.

It is this integrative approach of looking at landscape as a kind of self-organising system, overlaid by conscious human planning activities and the unity of pattern and process, which makes this book unique. Landscape draws from a wide range of neighbouring disciplines, of which the landscape planner or designer needs to be aware, but which are often taught as distinct elements. Bell binds these fundamentals together, which enables the landscape to be ‘read’, and this reading to be used as the basis for planning and design.

This second edition updates and refreshes the original material with added sections and new photos, particularly making use of the developments in satellite photography. Featuring full colour throughout, this textbook is ideal for anyone studying landscape architecture or any of the disciplines which intersect with the landscape, and which affect it.

Landscape - Patterns, Perception, and Process
By "jon"
I bought this book for a class about two years ago, it was a not required, but my professor suggested it in addition to our required text. After the semester ended, the course was reformatted, and this book was not being bought back. This book sat on the shelf with others I've kept, decided to buy, or also have been left with until about November.

I really wish we had used the book, I wish that I had read it earlier because some of the design principles raised by Bell have dramatically helped to improve my work. I haven't finished the book yet, but it has helped me greatly to understand my own designs to explain them to others, as well as to form a starting point with the idea that humans have certain native proportions, angles, shapes, colors, and patterns that are perceived as beautiful. These concepts are necessary when you are involved in landscape architecture, and I'm very glad I ended up using this book.

Landscape
By Dean Apostol
I have had this book for years, since just after it came out. I have known the author for many years and we published a book together: Designing Sustainable Forest Landscapes. The author, Simon Bell, is a leading thinker, researcher, and quite capable landscape architect who has spent his career trying to understand landscape patterns and processes and how these can be used in design and conservation. I have often dug into my copy to find references to issues that I am working with day to day, in the field of landscape ecology and aesthetics.
