This text provides perhaps the most concise and authoritative resource for the field of Metallurgical Failure Analysis that I have read. Rather than apporaching failures from a cookbook perspective, that is only linking cause to failure through single case histories, this author presents the fundamental concepts of the discipline and suplements them with appropriate examples.After reading the book, I am considering using it a text to a course that previously could only be approached with personal course notes. This is the most comprehensive and fundamentally organized book I have read in years. Well worth twice the price.

Compliments other texts, but has individual weaknesses

This book has a ton of great information in it, but could use more supporting notation with the pictures. The quality and resolution of the pictures and figures is lacking as well. I have much higher expectations for the print quality of modern books. I found myself struggling with many of the figures, because the author does not do a great job at elaborating on what the picture is trying to communicate. Rarely do the pictures have arrows pointing out key features. Sometimes features are so obvious an arrow is not critical; however, the eye of a non-expert sometimes needs a little help.

I also found the author does not always follow convention with respect to variables. For example, I have quite a lot of experience in Weibull and life data analysis, and I have never run across the variables the author used for the Weibull parameters.

On a positive, this book does provide a good historical account of many analysis methods.

I do not recommend this book, if it your first text on failure analysis. I find it most helpful when I have additional texts to tie loose ends together. I recommend Brooks and Choudhury's book if you are looking for more of a reference to be used in a professional environment.

In the end, I am glad I have this text in my personal library; however, I would be very disappointed if it was my first (or only) text on the topic.

Why is so little published on product failure? The subject is serious enough given the dire consequences if the product carries passengers, for example. Analysis of major disasters is a well-known genre, such as the seemingly endless books about the loss of The Titanic, but failures where large loss of life does not occur seem under-published. Yet they can be just as important in revealing potential design flaws which could lead to much worse when unrecognised, or not addressed by product designers. The subject of forensic engineering has grown fast in the last two decades, prompted by the growth in litigation, which demands that expert investigation is undertaken to determine the cause or causes of specific failures. The present book attempts to address the problems of metal product failures in a very detailed and comprehensive examination of the failure of metal products. It identifies the major failure modes, such as fatigue, corrosion and under-design, and describes the ways of circumventing the problems. If there is any drawback, it is that other materials are not included, such as polymers, ceramics or glasses. The book is very well illustrated with numerous cases studies, many from the files of the author, and it deserves a wide readership.

Mexican novelist Taibo (Leonard's Bicycle, 1995, etc.) offers his political adventure-story take on Latin America's revered revolutionary, with heavy use of excerpts from Guevara's diaries and interviews with other sources. In the third biography of Guevara this year, Taibo spends little time investigating the revolutionary's personal life, which was detailed by Jon Lee Anderson (p. 343), and is similarly brief with his subject's initial political development and his changing views, which was Jorge Casta¤eda's focus (p. 1174). While acknowledging that he was a prolific reader of political tracts, revolutionary poetry, and a wide array of fiction, Taibo notes that when it came to the politics of revolution, ``as far as Cuba was concerned, Che was no more than a country intellectual who had never set foot in a city.'' It is Che the rebel fighter who became an international icon, and it is this aspect of his life that Taibo stresses--one third of the biography is dedicated to his successful year as a soldier and commander in Cuba. While his troops rested between battles, the tireless Che took charge of rebel training camps, gave basic reading lessons, tended to the wounded, and launched the guerrillas' own newspaper and radio station. Once, as Batista's forces were known to be preparing an offensive, Guevara took time out to prepare a splint for a wounded bird. In addition to his individual military victories, Taibo notes that the revolution's success was also due to Guevara's ability to step up the pace of assaults in late 1958 to take advantage of the crumbling dictatorship. After five frustrating years filling various roles in the new Cuban government, Guevara departed in semi-exile to do what he did best--but his expeditions in the Congo and Bolivia ended in failure and eventually in his execution. The Most Enjoyable of Che's Biographies

In the US, Paco Taibo II is better known within the mystery readers' crowd for his accomplished police stories with a touch of irony and a shrewd writing style. For this reason with certain apprehension I started reading this biography. In fact it was the first complete and serious Che's bio I have ever read. Later I grabbed Jon Lee Anderson's one... Of all Che's bios Paco's is the most enchanting one. It may lack the huge documention of Anderson's book, but it compensates it with an amazing style. Paco cannot divorce his own admiration of Che from his subject, but, hey, that is exactly why this book becomes so much enjoyable. I still recall grabbing the book (700 hundred pages!) one morning and going that same night to bed with the book in my hands! I couldn't stop reading it! Che's story is reflected under the light of an amazing storyteller. The episodes of Che's story are exquisitely threaded together in a masterful way. His life becomes flesh and blood in Paco's hands. The icon, the symbol of rebellion and struggle for social justice turns a man, an incredible, passionate and admirable human being throughout the book. The end cannot be better: it is ghostly but hopeful with a lot of energy and sadness and beauty: a song to Latin American history of struggle.

Che Alive...as they never wanted you to be...

As other reviewers have said, this is the best of the Che biographies. Paco Taibo does the research and tells the story in a way that brings life to a myth as few other biographers in any era have been able to do. This is Ernesto Guevara as he lived and died, and you can understand how he became "El Che" the icon of the "Unredeemed America", and what drove him inexorably towards the bullet that ended his life in the dilapidated schoolhouse at La Higuera. For anyone who has seen "The Motorcycle Diaries", this book is necessary reading. I bought it five years ago and read pretty much the whole thing in a couple days. Since then, I will often grab this book and start reading at some random point, and not put it down for an hour or so. As mentioned by someone before, once you start turning the pages it is difficult to stop. The reason for this is twofold. First, the life portrayed here was an epic journey and second, Taibo is a not only a storyteller par excellence, but has a keen sense of the history of the times and is able to inject his own commentary to illuminate many of the seminal events during the course of Che's life. He is also relating to Che from a Latin American perspective, distinctly different from what North American readers may be used to. For instance, his Mexican roots are in evidence by his comparison of the legendary Mexican comedic actor Cantinflas to Che's own occasional sense of the absurdity of life. It is these touches that also help set this biography apart from the others on Che. We see another side of the legend.

The biography starts with Che's family in Argentina, and their somewhat bohemian background. We learn how the young Ernesto suffered greatly from asthma, an affliction that would shape his stoic character all his life. We also learn that at an early age he followed the Spanish Civil War and the battles of the Second World War, and not only how the motorcycle trip with Alberto Granado helped form his outlook, but how he was forced to flee for his life from Guatemala as the elected government of Arbenz was violently toppled by Uncle Sam. This was the event that caused Che to pick up a rifle and give up on democracy as a means to effect change in Latin America, as well as made him willing to be incinerated in an atomic holocaust rather than surrender to a U.S. invasion of Cuba.

The history of the Cuban Revolution and Che's work for Fidel's government is fascinating reading, but perhaps the most impressive parts of the book were the last few chapters detailing the ill-fated Congo and Bolivian expeditions. The Bolivian campaign reads like a funeral dirge, but even here we see the determination and self-effacing humor of the protaganist shining through til the end. The last chapter is an inspiring summation of a life lived in the most uncompromising manner, and is probably the best eulogy written for that life. One senses the author's personal attachment to the subject, which by this time has firmly become the reader's as well.

The comment by another reviewer about the poor editing was true, as there are many typos and grammatical errors in the English edition I have. I am hoping this was or could be cleaned up in later printings so as not to detract from what is a classic text. Anyone interested in the life of Guevara will find this not only required reading, but a truly superlative biography by any standard.

BUY IT!

I was walking around wearing one of those 'Che' T-shirts and a guy asked me some questions about him. I felt pretty stupid not knowing more than I did. So I started reading about Che. That was 3 years ago.
I have read his diaries, speeches, FBI files, everything I could find....THIS was the BEST.
The author is truly a Che fan, but he still points out mistakes Che made, but the best thing is he provides everything in its context. He builds the background of where Che came from, what his life was. The reader FEELS 50's 60's Latin America so you can really emphasize with the actions and emotions of the integral characters.
Sum it up, even though it was a factual biography I still was totally engrossed reading 500 some pages in about 3 days, and still re-reading it.

but that is not to say I am unfamiliar with Pretty Little Liars

The Amateurs was my first experience with a book by Sara Shepard, I know I know, I can hear half of you gasping in shock. But it is true. I have never read her work, but that is not to say I am unfamiliar with Pretty Little Liars. As some of you know, I happen to be the proud owner of a 16 yr old daughter. So I have caught snippets of the television series and discovered the books lying casually around the house.

So let me explain in a bit more detail why I was very excited to receive this book. My daughter is hardly a reader. The normal titles strewn about her floor are “required” reading for her Honors English course. Discovering leisure reads in her possession is a huge and thrilling deal for me. So when I began to see a pattern with Sara Shepard’s work, I knew there was something special here. And to seal the deal, landing an advanced copy of her newest book suddenly made me one of the “cool” kids in my daughter’s circle! So immediately, The Amateurs was prone for success without having even been read. Great start! So what happens next?

I have learned, a lot in part to Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon (who I discovered as part of this tour), that YA Mystery is not bad. In fact, when you learn to adjust your mindset and discover a great author, it can be pretty rewarding. And that is exactly how I would describe The Amateurs. Rewarding. I quickly discovered that the author’s writing is clean and eloquent, avoiding flowery or useless speech. It feels precise, but just descriptive enough to allow you to fully picture the events unfolding with incredible ease.

The characters are evolved with enough depth to easily convey empathy and anger where needed. They are convincing. It is easy to appreciate their struggles and to like or dislike them. I understood within a matter of several chapters how this author has created so many characters my daughter has connected with. You find yourself invested. Simple, but important additions of appropriate details such as accessories and style complete the viable feel of true young adults. They work. And while I was not smitten with any particular character, I found myself enjoying Seneca and her friends acquired from Case Not Closed, an online crime solving forum.

The plot felt original and familiar at the same time. The story of a group of young adults struggling to solve the mystery of murder is definitely not a new concept. However, Shepard easily provided a fresh addition to the story with the introduction of the online forum and a group a characters coming together for the first time in hopes of solving a heinous crime. It created a unique experience for me and made perfect sense in a time where the internet connects so many of us.

I did not find The Amateurs to have a true element of suspense, as the story unfolds at a very steady pace for the most part. However, the mystery vibe is definitely present, as I soon realized I was unable to pinpoint any definitive suspects. Of course there were multiple people in question regarding the death of Helena, but everyone seems to have an alibi or leave just enough room for question. It is hard to commit to one or two particular “prime” suspects. Sign of a good mystery, right?!

I found myself having to put the book down for days at a time because I do not like to allow too much time between completion and reviews to past. I was tearing through this too fast for my preferred review date. Shame on me for being excited and starting too soon. I have stumbled across several mixed reviews and a few low scores, but here are my final and honest thoughts: The end result was a light, and enjoyable read that I would recommend to any fan of YA Mystery, especially on the younger end of the spectrum. The conclusion was fantastically surprising, leaving a beautiful segue into future editions. This is a title that is worth investing the time in. I now have a better understanding of why this author has reached my daughter on a level so many others could not.

From the moment that I saw that Sara Shepard was writing a new book I KNEW I had to read it. Why? Because I am a HUGE fan of the Pretty Little Liars series and needed another fix. This book in particular, while markedly different than the PLL series, does share the same type of atmosphere as PLL which makes it easy to fall into the pages. I love the plot of this one as well and readers will get a taste of adolescent sleuthing at it's finest. Now, while this may not be by favorite Sara Shepard book, it will stand out in the genre as it is the perfect mystery to dive into and solve along with the characters. So fans of the author, and fans of YA/NA mysteries should definitely grab their copies of this novel when it is released.

Very detailed and informative.

One of the best kindle books about gambling addiction. I like the detail and thourough explanation of how online gambling sites mislead with their free bonus plays or how extensive the loan industry is on exploiting gamblers. It seems there is too much money to be made from addicted gamblers to really find a cure treatment. I do wonder if peace with the Lord would give the author peace and happyness to quit the gambling addiction. I wish there was a detailed book on gambling addiction written for family members on all the signs and tricks addicted gamblers use to con money out of people and detail on GA meetings ...and from what I've read so far about them from other books..they are a joke as far as curing the addicted gambler.

About the Author

Award-winning Canadian humorist and writer Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was the author of more than 50 literary works, and between 1915 and 1925 was the most popular humorist in the English-speaking world. Leacock s fictional works include classics like Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich, and Literary Lapses. In addition to his humor writings, Leacock was an accomplished political theorist, publishing such works as Elements of Political Science and My Discovery of the West: A Discussion of East and West in Canada, for which he won the Governor General's Award for writing in 1937. Leacock s life continues to be commemorated through the awarding of the Leacock Medal for Humour and with an annual literary festival in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario.

Everyone asks for the recipe just buy them a cookbook too!

Everytime I make cookies from this cookbook people ask for the recipes. I have started to buy them as Christmas gifts and put a batch of cookies from the book with the book. If you bake any of the cookies people will ask for the recipe. Make sure you have the book handy. The Holiday Lime cookies are a big hit every time. The Almond Bonbons are as pretty as they are yummy. The Double Chocolate Cherry cookies were a big hit. I substituted dark chocolate and pretend they are heart healthy. The Candy Bar Brownies are good for those who love a really sweet gooey cookie. If you like cookies this is the book for you. If you don't love cookies then buy the book and make the cookies for a friend.

The authors, one a prominent asset-allocation adviser and the other a former head of macroeconomic forecasting for the Bank of England, warn that it's only a matter of time before the overexuberant market of the early 21st-century topples like its counterparts in 1929 and 1968. Here they set out to show why and how this will happen--as well as to tell stockholders what they should and should not do if they want to emerge intact.

Much better than Shiller's new book

Smithers and Wright have written a very compelling indictment of today's stock prices. They argue that prices are way too high by historical standards, and exhort us to SELL. This is the same conclusion reached by Yale Professor Robert Shiller in his new book "Irrational Exuberance"; however, Smithers and Wright are much more convincing.
Smithers and Wright use as a measure of valuation for stocks a statistic called "q" (or Tobin's q, named after Nobel laureate and Shiller colleague James Tobin). q represents the value of equities divided by the cost of replacing the underlying capital stock. So you might expect the stock market to be worth somewhere near q=1, where companies are worth what it cost to build them; historically, the average value of q is near 1.
Smithers and Wright show that changes in q and equity prices are almost identical, since the cost of replacing the capital stock changes so little. They also show that high values of q are associated with terrible subsequent returns. They show how a simple strategy of selling when q rises to 1.5 and buying again when q falls below 1 * trounces * a buy-and-hold strategy. And they top it all off by showing that today's level of q, around 2.5, is unprecedented. So SELL!
The reason the book is so much better than Shiller's is that Smithers and Wright give a coherent, fact- and theory-based argument for why q should be used to value stocks, not just P/E, stock earnings yield compared to bond earnings yield, or other popular measures. Shiller just used P/E and told us to sell due to today's high P/E; he did not even consider, not to mention try to debunk, other theories of valuation.
Smithers and Wright point out, for example, that in the early '30s, P/E was very high due to the depressed depression-era profits of companies, but that q was very low, providing the buy signal of a lifetime that would have been missed by looking at P/E alone.
The only negatives of this otherwise excellent book are: (1) Like most finance books, this one would gain from adding computations of after-tax returns, which shift us away from fancy trading strategies and towards buy-and-hold in taxable accounts. (2) They should admit that there are significant differences between today's economy and economies of the past. For example, in an economy such as ours where intellectual property is paramount and provides barriers to entry, firms' values may stay above the cost of replacing capital.

Entertaining, Readable, and Thought Provoking

This is far from the dry boring stuff that is usually written on finance. The authors produce an extremely convincing and logical argument that the stock market is overvalued. This is based on comparing Tobin's q to its long term average. Tobin's q is based on flow of funds data and hence overcomes the problem of looking at corporate data. They also discuss other valuation techniques and explain their strengths and weaknesses. The book is full of interesting insights. I particularly like an example they use to demonstrate the power of compund interest. A gem of a book and well worth reading what ever your view on the state of world equity market.

Buy and hold or buy and sell?

Although there's plenty of evidence one cannot time the market short term--just look at managed portfolios compared to major stock indexes--that does not mean it's not possible over much longer cycles. The usual metric, P/E ratio, for measuring these cycles is occasionally wrong, like once or twice a century, e.g. if earnings are unusually small, as in the Depression. Better to use something similar to price-to-book value, "q". Averaging over all companies, and looking back over the last hundred years of market data, q tells you when stocks are overpriced more reliably than P/E. If you buy stocks at below average q and sell them when q is above average, you'll outperform a buy and hold strategy.

Of course, people already ignoring P/E are unlikely to be swayed by a refinement. That's why the second aspect of this book is important. It's one of few books that tells you *not* to own stocks now. It presents historical data--someone unfortunate enough to have entered the market just before the 1929 crash would have had to wait 25 years to catch up with an all bond portfolio--to show how bad an investment stocks can be.

Holding bonds until P/E returns to single digits, where it was at the start of the bull market in 1982, will never appeal to some people, but that's this book's advice in a nutshell.

About the Author
The Far Side was syndicated in more than 1,900 daily newspapers from 1980 to 1995, when Gary Larson retired. During its run, the cartoon spawned 22 books from AMP, which were translated into a total of 17 different languages. For his work with The Far Side, Larson was awarded the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist from the National Cartoonists Society in 1991 and 1994. The group also named The Far Side Best Syndicated Panel in both 1985 and 1987.

Im a collector who is replacing my beyond well worn Gary Larson books. My grand kids are getting old enough to want to read these now. So I sit with them and explain why they are each funny until they start to " get it,"

Off-the-Wall Comedy At Its Best

My son is in the USAF and as you can imagine, it can be stressful, challenging and sometimes boring. He has always loved the comedy of "The Farside" and as a token of how proud I am of him, I set him this book and a few others. These books have not disappointed him at all!

If you have someone that looks at the world through a pair of x-ray glasses purchased from the back of a magazine and always has something to laugh at, I would recommend any of Gary Larson's "The Farside" books as a gift. If laughter is indeed the best medicine, then these books could cure anything.
